I honestly liked DS3's designs better. It's not too overly complicated to the point it gets ridiculous, but it's got quite a few avenues for exploration so it's not stale. The first game required work and effort, because there was no guarantee that it would sell. They needed to make it as good as possible.

The third game was guaranteed to sell. They just had to avoid making the map as shit as the second. Past that, they could hide the linear design behind a bunch of dead ends and reconnecting branches, and call it a day.

I never got the appeal of DS1's map design. Am I the only one who goes "Oh, I'm back HERE again? Fucking boring, I thought I was going somewhere new and exciting".

And let's be honest, the only reason the map has so many connections in on itself is because you don't unlock fast travel until the very end and it's unreasonable to make you walk all the way back to where you want to go. DS1's map basically boils down to this.

Which is infinitely better than just being able to teleport to any bonfire you've visited. It makes thte world feel real and physical and connected, not just a bunch of branching linear paths.

I remember when I first started DS3 and got so pissed when the game just teleports you to High Wall of Lothric. I couldn't believe that From couldn't be fucked to connect Firelink Shrine to the rest of the world.

Then I got to the Champion Gundyr area and realized that the Firelink Shrine hub is set in an entirely different time and/or world.

DS3 is pretty legit.

The biggest problem with DS3 is over-familiarity. At this point in the series life it no longer has the ability to evoke the same feelings of loneliness and desperation in the player. I find it hard to fairly rate it against the other games because of that, as they are what make the Souls experience so special.

In Dark Souls 3 there is A LOT of ambient sounds I you listen to it. To me that makes a great difference.

Wasn't that a bug, I thought it was fixed in the PC version. You could hear the ambient noise if you stood still but then it was immediately drowned out when you started moving again. Compared to Demon Souls where there was lots of background noise going on

You can literally turn around and see all the progress you made.

DS2, in the other hand, it doesn't matter which path you choose, it always feels like a long corridor. You reach the end and the you go to the other corridor. Not to mention that the world doesn't even have sense.

The only place where it worked was the parish and church area. After that it was just like hey here's this valley with dragons that's basically just a long corridor from the Darkroot elevator to Blighttown. And after that there were still these long caves between the valley and Darkroot/Blighttown. Going from the lake to the parish you run up like five flights of stairs. Even then, outside that early cluster area the game pretty much branches off into different directions like DS2 with the skeleton world branch, the lava world branch and the Anor Londo branch

I hated Dark Souls 3 for the endless references to 1 and 2
but at the same time I unironically love the Soul of Cinder, it's great that the world is so beyond saving that the first flame itself takes a form and tries to fight off the being coming to prolong it, it knows how hopeless the situation is and wants itself to burn out for good
and then you fight it and it incorporates the techniques of everyone who's ever sacrificed themselves to it over the thousands of years, culminating in channelling the strength of Gwyn in one final desperate struggle as the music changes to his melancholy theme

DS2 is by far the worst Souls game and to be honest, even though I finished it and bought the Scholars edition, I can't be assed to play it again to see if it finally got good.

I have 100+ hours on DAS, DES and DAS3, finished 2 with some 40 hours and never touched it again.

There's a bunch of other smaller examples too. Like for example look at the tower of flame from majula. Then look at majula from the Tower of flame. The position is wrong. Disregarding the fact that you go way too far for the amount of travel time you walk. You walk a couple of kilometers, and then you look back and you see you've suddenly traveled what looks like 20 miles.

Or how you get to No Man's Wharf from the Tower of flame. Which if you think about the amount of stairs you go down makes you wonder why you're not under water by the time you get to the cave system.

Don't worry anon, I also think Soul of Cinder is a great final boss. Though in general I don't think there's a problem with a sequel referencing and expanding on the lore from its predecessor. Only reason I take issue with DaS2 was because it seemed like at some point in development they wanted to do something totally new with it, but then shoehorned in references and didn't really do anything with them besides cheapen what they had created. DaS3 doesn't really pretend it's doing anything other than following up the first game.

I think kind of the core problem with Dark Souls 2 is that it seems like it has nothing to do with anything. Dark Souls 1 was about buying the world a little bit of time before the world ends. Dark Souls 3 is about pretty much the same thing, doing whatever you can to buy the world a couple more months before it just dies. Dark Souls II has almost nothing to do with that and it's basically about a gold-digging queen and a king who disappeared. Well really it's about finding the answer about your Hollowing but the game kind of forgets that by the time you get to majula. But the point is it's kind of its own thing set aside from the First Flame.

See this is the real problem with DS2. Despite what you might believe it's okay to like a game the rest of /v/ doesn't like so much. The problem with DS2 fags is how fan boyish they are. Any problem someone has with DS2 is invalid or wrong or nitpicking. DS1 fags don't typically scream and cry when people point out that literally half the game is kind of shitty. That reminds me how somebody conducted an experiment with Dark Souls 1. They put down prism Stones everywhere and then went to other locations to see if they matched period and for the most part they did. There is only one part of the game where the world geometry didn't make sense and that was the demon ruins seems to float in the sky relative to Ash Lake. Other than that it was amazing how well everything matched up in Dark Souls 1

Well his one goal that he tells you right off the bat is that he wants to find his own sun. We don't really know what that means, but we know that he really really wants to find it. He starts out really optimistic but the more time passes the more depressed and hopeless and miserable he becomes that he can't find it. In the end his story can end in one of two ways. Either he gets taken over by a cave bug that tricks him into thinking he found his own sun only for you to murder him and for him to slowly die in darkness. Or he can help you slay Gwyn and maybe set himself on fire which is an equally miserable ending but hey he became the Sun so it's fine right? The Hunter's Dream is an important enough location and has enough thematic significance that I don't have a problem, atmospherically, with having to go there to level up. On the one hand majula was maximum comfy but you never really get that opressive isolated atmosphere where when you can just beam back to comfyland. I rember getting to the blight town bonfire when i was still absolute trash and it felt like i was trapped in this deep isolated place surounded by death and dispairand the only way out was forward. It's and amazing game, Demons Souls was my favorite until I got my hands on it. It improved in every way, removed all the boring shit while adding a lot more, none of the other souls games, and very few other games in general can even compete, not even BB. Majoras Mask and Resident Evil 4 are some that hold ground against Dark Souls. It's one of the best games ever made, this will echo throughout history.
