Last time I had to buy speakers and I was 15 and I bought whatever I could afford.
It was a good purchase too, but I left it with my parents.

I was thinking $500 at most but I don't even know what the price ranges are or if there's anything half decent at that price. If there's nothing worth buying for $500 I'm willing to go higher but not a lot.
It's a small room and all I want is clean surround sound at a low volume.

a $500 for amp + 5 spekaers + subwoofer is gonna be trash

Yes, get a card or external dac.

I just grabbed a logitech Z313 set for 30 dollars, it sounds nice and loud and the bass boost is alright. Can't complain.
