Anyone have any experience using component on PS2? I of buying a component cable for use on my HDTV. I think it would be a big improvement from just using standard AV cables on my HD capable television.

Yup i got component caables for my ps2. It just makes the picture a bit more crisp. Ofc it doesn't really improve the resolution or anything, but with an HD tv, using AV cables makes the game look like porridge.

So yeah go for them. It's a bit better.
>>
literally anything is better than composite

well except RF I guess
>>
>>377805635
I was using composite for the longest time and switched to component is it's a improvement, more colors, every looks more smooth and I stream occasionally so getting a component cable was a must.
>>
>>377806020
>tfw had a TV with s-video in 1990 but kept using composite until 2006
>>
>>377805635
they make a huge difference. when I first got an HDTV way back in the day from a SDTV, my PS2 was basically unplayable on it until I got component cables
>>
Yeah it looks way better than composite if that's what you're wondering so good that the next step up is RGB which pretty much cuts out the middle man and provides the clearest image possible.
>>
>>377805635
Stupid glow in the dark CIA nigger, that's not how you hook up a PS2. Do it like a white man. A white man had it hooked up to a CRT, with sync-on-green RGsB SCART.
>>

>>377806035
>>377806351
I always thought the PS2 was shit tier because of how bad and burry standard definition made games. I guess the PS2 was more powerful than the technology at the time let it be.
>>
>>377805635

The image will be noticeably sharper and the colors noticeably more vibrant. Component is also required for progressive scan mode to work correctly.
>>
>>377806676
That's what I'm getting it for is progressive scan. I saw it was an option in the options menu for Star Wars: Bounty Hunter and before then I had no idea that the PS2 could even do HD.
>>
>>377805635
everything is better than composite, well besides RF. composite is SHIT. It was shit on PCs and will always be SHIT. Americans got cucked when they gave us composite while everyone else was using the superior RGB or svideo

composite was far outdated already by the time it came out, most common TVs already supported better stuff since the early 90s, may it be pal or ntsc regions

but everything still shipped with a composite cable for goddamn who knows what reason, like it had to work with your old clunky TV you bought in the 80s or the lowest tier of the shit TVs
>even the PS3 gave a composite cable
>>
>>377807021
great image.
>>
>>377805902
some ps2 games support 1080i
>>
I remember the jump from 480i with composite cables to 480i with component cables on ps2 very vividly.

I was in the middle of playing Dragon Quest 8 around the time I made the upgrade, so I had a great basis for comparison. Everything just became sharp and clear. With composite cables, you'd see a blur around text and button prompts that are nonexistent with component cables.

Protip, the PS1, PS2, and PS3 all use the same A/V port. You can interchangeably use component cables that are advertised as use on a PS3 for your PS2. It may be cheaper to buy this way than something that specifically says "PS2 component cables"
>>
>>377806846

Technically it's not HD, it's ED as it's only 480p

The PS2 can actually output up to 1080i, the barrier is not the hardware in the console but the available bandwidth of the video cables, but as far as I know no game supports anything more than 480p. They didn't even support 576p so if you are in the PAL territories you don't get progressive scan.
>>
>>377807021
>like it had to work with your old clunky TV you bought in the 80s or the lowest tier of shit TVs

When I first got my PS2 I didn't even have an HDTV and I was literally using old shitty TVs because I was a poorfag. Now that I have HDTVs I would like to relive nostalgic games with better quality.
>>
>>377805635
arent you better off emulating ps2? you cant get hd resolutions that way
>>
>>377807621
better 90% of the time

I only use my PS2 as a last resort
>>
>>377807373
>You can interchangeably use component cables that are advertised as use on a PS3 for your PS2. It may be cheaper to buy this way than something that specifically says "PS2 component cables"

Great tip. Thanks a lot based anon.
>>
>>377807621

Depends.
Not everything is still 100% emulatable, and you need a beefy cpu/gpu for certain games.

If you have an actual ps2, just put free boot or mcboot and pirate every game ever and play off your HDD
>>
>>377805635
It's an improvement sure.
Playing an SD console on an HDTV is vomit inducing most of the time though.
Unless your TV has god tier upscaling, which is pretty rare.
>>
>>377807621
I don't have a PC or newer gen console at home. My gaming PC is at my other place. My Xbox 360 controller broke and I was getting bored of that anyways so I thought for home I'd just buy PS2 meme games like Grand Theft Auto and Tony Hawk than buy a new controller.
>>
Do I need a really good cpu/gpu to emulate ps2 games on 720p?
>>
>>377808265

Depends on the game, honestly.

Just make sure you download the latest developments build. The latest public release is old as fuck.
>>
>>377808265
that's 1.5x the original resolution of 480p, shouldn't need much
>>
>>377808265
I was doing 1080p with my 2008 PC just fine

probably some games that wouldn't have run well, but it worked for those I played
>>
>>377805635

>all these autists spending a gorillion dollars on rarely used cables because jaggies triggers their sickness

but MUH CRTS amirite?
>>

>tfw my friend owns that SpongeBob game AND the Jackass game so I can just borrow them from him

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_games_with_alternate_display_modes
>>
>>377808453

It's 3x the resolution.

480p is 307,200 pixels, 720p is 921,600.
>>
>>377808762
I can buy one for under $10, maybe $5 if I bought online. If it improves the picture quality I don't really care about the five bucks.
>>
>>377808762
you clearly never tried ps2 on an hdtv, it's a blurry mess, it's not a minor nuisance
>>
>>377808826

I don't know for sure if it's true but I remember hearing that all 1080i supporting games for the PS2 are actually just outputting upscaled 480p. I'm inclined to believe it because 1080i is a very high resolution for a PS2 game to try to render on that hardware, it's going to have a big impact on framerate. Even interlaced it's more than 3 times the render resolution of 480p.
>>
>>377809042

I guess you have the several hard bodies required to move those suckers.
>>
>>377809435

but if you can't get HD then who fucking cares? I've seen the difference and I'm not one of those losers that gets triggered by interlacing.

>>
>play paper mario on my wii with RYW cable recently on my hdtv
>its been years since iv touched the wii or paper mario so i just play it, whatever
>a day or so later i switch the cabel over to my old CRT tv to play it while laying down
>paper mario looks objectively 100% better in ever single way from colors, to sharpness, everything looks superior and blows the hdtv the fuck out
>find an old cable a friend gave me like the one in op with blue and green
>try that out on my hdtv
>still looks like trash compared to the crt

It was seriously like night and day. In like 30 years when crts are fucking dying and no one will make any more of them because of an obsession with save 2 feet of space, all old consoles will forever look like garbage without some SUPER shenanigans going on.

I'm still shocked by how bad it is on hdtv compared to the crt. I thought that was people just overexaggeraing but now, really.

I always forget which is composite and which is component so I just said that.
>>
>>377809743
did you take that picture with your cockhole?
>>
>>377805635
component (or rgb when available) is nearly required for digital tv's, mostly because plenty of "modern" composite digitizers are really fucking lazy and smash the shit out of the yellow cable.
the pixel nature of a modern digital image doesn't really survive being crushed down into a lossy analog compression from 1953, an unmolested component image is easier for a digital tv to recover.

crt's only get recommended not because of the big chunk of glass, but because the dumb analog parts have a better affinity for a dumb analog signal than unnecessarily dumb digital parts.
>>
>>377810470
yes my cockhole takes pictures. that's what the game looks like, it's not the picture quality
>>
Use component on a real crt because a ps2 will look like crap on a hd tv no matter what
>>

With component cables and AV cables every game has weird ghosting and bad fps. Is something wrong with my PS2 or cables or was PS2 always like this and I just remember it with rose tinted goggles? I swear Silent Hill 2/3 and Nocturne didn't use to be like this.
>>
>>377805635
RF convertor > composite > S-video > component

Component is the best you're going to get for old analog signal sources that support that type of connection

Depends on the game if you want to switch to 480P, 720P or 1080i. Just hold triangle and z during startup. There's a site dedicated to this shit, but I am too lazy to go fetch it.
