The went some ways to explain this in Cataclysm, but it's still dumb. The whole idea is that Sylvanas keeps bringing them back with the help of the valkyrs she liberated from the Lich King. Humans that die in the northern kingdoms are essentially the supply of new undead she keeps making and in the process she does her best to strip them of their old personalities to rebuild them as new undead citizens. It's all really dumb and just an excuse to somewhat rationalize the Forsaken as a race.

In reality the Forsaken would be an ever dwindling neutral race.

the night elves were ruled by azhara and the social elite, called highborne, she sucked demon dick, got their city flooded and she and a bunch of other highborne became naga.

then the remaining night elves were lead by Malfurion, who outlawed magic. some accepted the outlaw, others like Dath'Remar Sunstrider continued using it which was supposed to be punishable by death but Malfurion decided to exile them instead on account of being a giant pussy.

Dath'Remar lead his highborne exiles to Lordaeron, where they were cut off from the blessing of the World Tree which the dragon aspects had used to grant the night elves immortality. Being cut off from the World Tree and with the Well of eternity destroyed they shrank in size and their skin turned pink, eventually calling themselves High Elves.

I really wish there were a wow arpg or some shit. I like the races and setting and lore and all that but the gameplay is shit outside raids and the grind is soul crushing
