Funny. I just played Fire Emblem followed immediately by Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced and Fire Emblem blows it out of the water. FFTA is just so clunky and awkward to control in comparison. The Fire Emblem menus, button mapping and quality of life features make FFTA look like a shoddily made pile of crap.

Pretty bad taste. If you wanna talk about it being depressing that good srpgs series are dead, there's Langrisser (Langrisser 3DS counts as dead), Front Mission, Shining Force.

AW games aren't even srpgs.

I'm close to beating the GBA Fire Emblem and loved every minute. Never played RPGs before but I know someone who has Shin Megami Tensai on DS and offered to lend it me. It looks kind of similar. Is it a good game to play next or should I hold off?

I'm assuming you mean Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, which is the strategy RPG subseries to the main SMT games, which are closer to standard RPGs
It's not quite the same but it's a great SRPG, if you like the gameplay style that FE has then you'll probably enjoy it
