>FF tactics
>tactics ogre
>shining force
Why don't they make games like these anymore?
You mean like Disgaea? Because not enough people buy the games.
Sold well enough to be a success but not enough to warrant a sequel or a part 2.
>>377734831
because most of your units are generic and end up being soulless
>>377735343
FFT got two sequels and a remake though
Disgaea constantly gets sequels and is just a basic grindan max numbers game
>>377734831
What do you mean "games like these"? SRPGs? They're alive. Past their prime for sure, but still around. SNES and PS1 was definitely the heyday, though.
>dat feel when Vandal Hearts 2 gets hated because some people can't deal with a different way of handling turn-based combat

>FF tactics
>tactics ogre
Yasumi Matsuno directed both of those. For the former, he was fired from Square. For the latter, Square owns the intellectual property, so he can't work on it.
>shining force
SEGA is barely holding itself together after so many failures at their flagship franchises (namely Sonic) but their fortune may turn if the new retro Sonic takes off and their investment into PC ports succeeds. It's a strange fucking day where I have to admit that a new Shining Force is more likely than a new Ivalice/TO game.
>>377735481
remake of FFT for PSX??
Where
>>377735748
Was this the stupid one where fucking units moved in the same turn so you have to GUESS where they'll be when you make an attack? It was literal SHIT compared to the first one. Changed everything from the tone to the art to the battle system. First one was comfy as fuck with enjoyable characters and that satisfying blood geyser when you killed shit.
>>377735481
Remaking is easy which is just a port. That sequel is just adding more stuff which is also easy. Doing an entire sequel from scratch will be costly.
>comparing fft to disgaea
Just don't.

>Why did he get fired for TO? That game is fantastic in every sense
He got fired for taking 6 years to direct Final Fantasy 12, which is really quite interesting, because FF15 took ... about a decade? They haven't fired Nomura though.
The Tactics Ogre PSP remake was actually quite interesting because Square hired him as a contractor (after they fired him for FF12), which basically means he was their slave without any healthcare benefits or reasonable hours. More recently he's been contracted again by Square to make a FF14 Ivalice-themed raid, but I couldn't tell you much about that because I'm not a shit-eating FF14fag
here's a rare 1995 photo of him in Los Angeles

What a fucking shame. A tactics ogre revamped for new system, or even Vita would be so amazing. A dynamic weather system, higher quality audio, etc. Fuck, I loved that game.
>ctrl+f suikoden

>>377736787
Advance Wars / Wargroove is a straight tactics game though, not a tactical RPG

>easily the best writer SE ever had
>relegated to making mobile games in a basement somewhere
I'm certainly glad he's come out to work on something bigger. FF14 is already in many ways just a knockoff Ivalice setting .
>FFT's aesthetic
WHY
WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO MAKE THIS ART STYLE AGAIN
WHY
>>377737052
>easily the best writer SE ever had
I mostly agree, but Alexander O Smith's translations definitely acted as a multiplier on the quality. A good localizer did fucking wonders for WOTL and the PSP TO:LUCT.
I respect Alex Smith almost as much as I do Matsuno.
>>377737063
It has more to do with how art style change depending on what's popular in the anime industry.
>>377736867
i remember playing suikoden tactics as a kid and thinking it was alright, especially the elemental effects on the tiles
but i recently tried to play it again, last year, and i couldn't stand the shitty writing, story, and pacing
>>377734831
If Matsuno wasn't such an ass to work with we would have a proper FFT sequel instead of the abominations we got on the gameboy.
>>377737052
>>easily the best writer SE ever had
I think he just writes in a very different style compared to JRPG writers in general. Maybe because he draws so heavily from western events and history.
I wish SE would just say they're fucking sorry and get him back and make some TO and FF.
Also, ff12 was way better then 13 and 15 so maybe he should do 16.
But really I'd rather have a real fft and TO sequel.
I don't like the TO remake, they made it more grindy and micro-managy and easier at the same time. It bugs me that almost all google results for tactics ogre now are for the remake.
The SNES/ps1 version is a masterpiece.
>>377737529
PSP version should be experienced just for the masterful orchestral soundtrack. If that overture doesn't get you pumped nothing will.

I mean, feel free to update the humans. Whatever. That takes care of weebshitters.
But the music, colors, items, animations, mood, creature designs, let's have a grand comeback.
>>377737506
Matsuno was the producer for FFTA though.
>>377737516
That's true. Coming from someone in the Balkans, Tactics Ogre is more or less re-skinned Yugoslav Wars with some fantasy thrown in there. They even have their own version of Tito.
>>377737794
SE literally made him a producer to just give him credit for creating the FFT universe.
He had close to no involvement in the development of it, since he was working on FF XII at the time.

>tfw resurrected Langrisser turned out to be a rotten corpse dangling on a strings comically
I also remember they were hyping some Langrisser MMO or something back then, did all this shit died?
>>377738000
according to wikipedia he dropped out of Hosei University for a foreign policy degree, so i'm not surprised his primary inspiration was political history
IMO this sort of cross-pollination is preferable to keep games fresh. otherwise we'll just get an echo-chamber of Ubisoft shit
>>377736241
Your underage is showing.
We used to all call the first PlayStation PSX. Whatever that faggy thing that came out later and took PSX is so irrelephant that PSX still means PlayStation.
>>377737224
Does the Japanese version have that olden style writing as well or was that all his doing? Why can't all Japs games have such fantastic quality of writing?
>>377738237
Maybe. All I know is both TO and FFT would be far lesser games if not for their intricate and believable settings, and if we got some generic fantasy instead.
All three of those games are absolutely on the left side of the bell curve in the genre.
>>377738237
I agree - look at Nintendo's Koizumi and his theater background.
Honestly, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.
>>377738446
>Does the Japanese version have that olden style writing as well or was that all his doing?
From what I've heard, FFT's original Japanese script was very basic. So at least for FFT, the Middle English stylization was 100% Smith
>>377734831
because kids just play minecraft and mobile games.
>>377734831
Because they are childishly simplistic. It's like asking why they don't make mario games like on the NES anymore.

Easy Trivia Question: Does choosing a magic-based Job counteract the innate Stat growth of the different genders of characters?
If I really wanted to stump you, I'd have asked you something about the history of Ivalice's kingdoms, buried deep within the game's sidetext.
Besides, it's a video game - there's little wrong with simple combat and mechanics, especially when children are supposed to be able to play it, too.

Difficulty, quality, complexity, story simplicity, you're too vague.

>>377739241
The combat is good but the rest of the game is ill-designed for 2+ people. I don't know why they expected to combine text dumps and multiplayer without having any issues
>>377739159
Well, like >>377738950 said, don't forget trash like Disgaea or equally simple yet far more forgettable entries like Luminous Arc.
At least FFT has overall quality, despite a few Job system flaws.

>>377741228
+ job system
+ not based on grinding forever
disgaea is way more grind based and it has shit like healing not giving exp, which converts into even more grinding
Because most people who buy videogames are shallow and only like awesome graphics and pretty explosions.
Why don't they make games like these anymore?
Mordheim is only about a year old and it's an amazing strategy RPG. No, it's not weeb anime shit, but that's a good thing.
