No.
Everyone is a sellout. You, me, everyone. If you created something popular and realized you could monetize the fuck out of it, you would do so, and only idiots would blame you.
The people who claim they would do otherwise never had the opportunity in the first place.

The initial art style is carefully crafted in order to attract as many players as possible.

Was it? It didn't look like anything else on the market. And you can listen to the developer commentary in-game where they talk about silhouettes, color theory, designing for maximum readability and glance value for the players, their influence from Norman Rockwell's America. It's clear they wanted to make an aesthetically pleasing and well thought out product.

It's kind of sad what it's become. All of the original charm has been lost.

Generic styles don't necessarily equate to most profitable or most appealing. And in fact, new styles often become the generic style, once people begin to copy them.
But what I mean, is that aesthetic appeal is inherently attention grabbing, and the more attention you grab, the more dollars you make. There are more efficient ways to get the player to recognize figures. But they put a lot of work to make it as appealing as possible, in order to attract as many players as possible.
