In earlier Zeldas, you gave Link a name and he didn't speak at all, and if he did there was a selection of different choices so you can craft Link's personality as you wish. This gave people the impression that Link was meant to be a self insert for the player

In BotW, you can't name Link and many of the dialog prompts only have one option, making him feel less like a self insert and more like a separate character, who just so happens to not speak very often.
