I feel the same anon. To me, Super Mario Maker is a clear sign of where the 2D Mario games are going. Super Mario Maker for 3DS had a shitton of premade levels, all of which I felt were really great, and used the elements in Mario Maker creatively. They also tended to use the NSMBU theme sparingly. Also, if you combine the sales of both versions of Mario Maker, they exceed NSMBU's sales. Because of all this, I think that the next 2D Mario won't be multiplayer focused, and it will use pixel graphics. It will be branded as a lost sequel to Super Mario World or something. That's where I predict the series will go.
