It has far better combat than souls regardless of whether they're both subpar, and the gore is more what OP probably wants. As you said though, neither is really good enough.

You're describing soulsborne type games, you're in luck because the genre seems to be growing. The Surge just came out, it's been scratching that itch for me.

Of course any example you give will have people going ">hurrr deep and technical combat". Sure, you don't have to think the combat is good, but if it's obvious that the game is focused on combat and the systems surrounding combat so yeah it fits the bill close enough.
