How does this game work? I'm getting my ass kicked by random dudes.

Quen if you're a scrub.
Otherwise git gud

Make sure you didn't accidentally choose the highest difficulty. I did that once.
If monsters are beating you, make sure you are using oils if you have them.

I died probably a couple dozen times in the pre-patch intro.
It had interesting difficutly curve.

Just lower the difficulty, since you can't handle it

What ? You should have played the game when it came out. Shit, even normal was hard. Then they patched it and normal is now dark difficulty.

Stop playing like it is DMC and step back. Dodge and hit in the back for 200% damage. Unlock parry quick. Quen is good too.
Yeah gitgud. basically the witcher games are polish skins of whatever games are hip at the time.
TW1 was Bioware RPGs
TW2 was Demon Souls
TW3 was Skyrim
And because CDPR can't do level balance, you become laughably overpowered towards the end of the game.
The first step is to understand the game isn't Dark Souls and doesn't have iframes on rolls. If you roll past hulk vanderhuge, he's going to hammer your spine into fine bonemeal.
Everything after that is basically sign-abuse.

This is the worst post in /v/ right now.
