If you know Japanese, you can buy used games at Sofmap, Traders or some smaller shops on the same area.
You can get some good deals and it is often much cheaper for niche games compared to ordering online from overseas.

But since you are there for a few months you can just visit stores and buy games online, Yahoo Auctions or whatever

4.Whats the best way/best places to buy NSFW anime stuff. (figures, games, etc.)

5. Ive heard about manga maid internet and porn cafes. Would you recommend any and are there any i should avoid?

6. Any places outside of akiba, shibuya, ike, shinjuku, meguro, harajuku you would recommend?

>1. whats the cheapest way to stay in akiba/shibuya overnight? do you have any specific recommendations? Ive always wanted to try a capsule hotel

I dunno, I lived relatively close by (about an hour by metro), so I could just come whenever. My friend tried a capsule hotel for few days and was pretty happy about it, so give it a try if you want.

>2.Do you have any recommendations for figures/anime and game merch?

I mostly focused on eroge. It's rather easy to get free eroge trinkets and shit just by preordering and attending events where they give out stuff to people who preorder. Sometimes you don't even have to preorder.

>3.In used stores does the stuff in the JUNK section work at all? Currently looking for a tv with HDMI for my room

Never bought anything like that.

>4.Whats the best way/best places to buy NSFW anime stuff. (figures, games, etc.)

Sofmap Amu, Sofmap Akiba 1, Trader 1 2 and 3, Mandrake.

>5. Ive heard about manga maid internet and porn cafes. Would you recommend any and are there any i should avoid?

Didn't go to any, I don't find the idea appealing. It mixes 2D and 3D too much. Specifically, I don't like the idea of a 3D girl acting in a "2D way". I get my cute 2D acting fix from 2D eroge.

>6. Any places outside of akiba, shibuya, ike, shinjuku, meguro, harajuku you would recommend?

Asakusa is nice, albeit too turisty. Also random shrines, just look up some bigger ones. They tend to have nice calm atmosphere.

I passed it on my way to Comiket.

Comiket advice:
Plan which tables you want to visit and prioritize.
Come by the first train (and be amazed by the endless crowds of people who somehow got there before you anyway).
Don't cut through lines.
Some building entrances might be reserved to specific lines, don't try to pass through, people in the line will see it as cheating and will push you away.

im a student (OP) and i got the internship here super easy. Whats you major? I recommend looking for internships n that field. My major is engineering so it happened to work out really well i was taking japanese and engineering

>>377598193
At the last Friday in each month new eroge comes out and Akihabara (specifically the fronts of Sofmap Amu and Sofmap Akiba 1) gets filled by lottery stands where people who bys specific games and show their receipts can win some stuff. Or even get it automatically. Of course, you have to buy relevant games.

At the same time they give out stuff to people who preorder upcoming games. Preorder costs 1000 yen usually. So if you want grab some stuff you can preorder, get it and then not pick up the game.

Often there are also give out events set to specific times, usually after 17:00, these are conducted by specific eroge makers and either anyone can line up and get stuff or again just people who preorder.

>>377598350
You don't need any sort of ticket for Comiket, you just come. Previously you needed to buy the catalog and show it as you enter, but that was changed few years ago. I'd recommend having a concrete plan of what you want to get there. Just coming to sightsee is pointless, there's too many people and too long lines to see anything.

How hard would it be to get around, poasibly go to an onsen or something, without speaking Japanese?

Johnny (our friend) insists that most, if not everything, has signs in English for tourists, and that most places will be easy enough to navigate without a guide.
>>
>>377598638
Study program conducted in Japanese? They usually want N2 minimum, N1 preferred.
>>
>>377598685
i'll at least learn a tad basic of japanese. if you don't know anything then it's just going to confuse the hell out of you.
>>
>>377598685
In major cities, generally enough English. Once you leave major cities, everything will be in Japanese. Signs won't have English. Onsens and traditional places that locals go won't have Japanese. Touristy places (so anything you can find on the English Internet) will have English.

However, most people will know enough English to point you in the right direction. You're not going to die, but don't expect anything more than that if you're going anywhere outside of Osaka.

If you're just staying inside Osaka, you'll be fine.
>>

If you try to even use shitty Japanese, they will just respond in English, probably because they won't be able to understand your accent. You also won't be able to understand their response even if you do manage to get some bery basic questions out.

>>377598685

>English teacher from non english country.

GOOD LUCK SON.

Seriously, the places I worked would hire native English speakers only. And even then, they would choose from English countries such as America, Australia, NZ, England. Even people from Germany who were fluent in English were a hard sell.

After that it goes blonde hair blue eyes european -> any other european -> asian -> everyone else.

They have enough europeans from English speaking countries they really have no incentive to hire anyone else. Why would they?

That isn't to say it doesn't happen, just you're going to have a much harder time.
>>
>>377598995
Only Philapenos which I can't even spell, if that counts.
>>
>>377598815

This whole thing is happening fairly soon, mostly because Johnny wants someone to house sit. Apparently his parents were living in Washington DC back in day, and someone broke in and trashed the place. His dog was found stabbed to death in the house, so she's doesn't really feel safe leaving their home unattended, even in Japan.

Johnny travels once a year to house sit for them, but he can't this year and is offering it to us. Half the airfare is covered, as well as some spending money.

Aside from the traveller's basics, what would you say are some essential phrases?

>>377598821

Well, we plan to travel by train and such a bunch. Our main concern is taking the wrong route, but we were told trains amd major buses all have english signage.

Would you say it's a bad idea to try to get to Akiba, Shibuja and a few rural areas?

>>
>>377599273
It all depends on how you handle stress and being a bit lost. If you enjoy figuring it out, you'll be alright. If you freak out then you might have a tough time.

Most Japanese people will want to help you out if you don't act like a psycho. Even standing around looking slightly lost will garner attention from Japanese people who want to use their English on a foreigner. So I think you will be fine.

As for some phrases that might be useful, (look up the pronunciation and practice it)

x ni ikitai desu (i want to go to x)

x wa doko desu ka (where is x)

x ga arimasu ka (do you have x?)

Are probably the three phrases that will make it so you don't die.

Just say to someone at the train station

kobe ni ikitai desu

And they will follow up with English telling you what platform and train to get.

That is so stupid man like I get that it makes sense to prefer natives but by the way you are describing it is that they look that somebody isn't native and they brush him off immediately
>>
>>377598685
Honestly if you don't know any japanese, if your staying anywhere but a big city (tokyo, osaka, kyoto) then its going to be hard. there's a lot of stuff in every day life that you don't realize you need to be able to communicate to do effectively (wash clothes, buying phone plans, read transportation signs, ask directions, etc.) There's also an element of some places not letting foreigners in depending on their ability (although this is more for onsens, prostitutes, things where you need to be able to understand cultural rules or have them be communicated to you). I've been here a week and the culture shock really hit me hard. Getting more accustomed now though.

If you want to go id really make sure you think through all the things you need and all the possible things that might go wrong. shit can get real if you're lost with no phone, no sense of direction, and no phone and or money

one last helpful tip, i live in the tokyo area and I'm shocked at how many places don't accept credit cards for payment
>>
>>377598950

Is Japan actually a good place to live?
>>
>>377599730
Well, the way my bosses explained it makes sense.

They want to make money. That is why they have a business. To many Japanese people, ethnicity and nationality are one in the same. They don't really understand the concept that asian people are born and grow up in other countries.

People who want to learn English, want to learn it from a European. A lot of people take English classes just so they can talk to more Europeans. They don't really want to talk to someone who looks pretty much like them. Western culture is cool for a lot of people there and that includes the people and their look.

So they don't want to lose money. They hire who will bring in clients

how'd you swing the 370k, anon? Promotions/career advancement or just a lucrative position?

I think it is, and I barely speak Japanese. Just prepare to be alone a lot

I don't think so. Especially if you are a foreigner. Japanese people Japanese people (especially in Tokyo) are quite reserved and keep to themselves. I doubt anyone would even bother you.
>>
>>377600535
Knew I was wise to reopen thread before I crashed. Lucrative position and I knew the hiring manager so helped me get a foot in the door.

Previously did Eikawa work for a while which was okay but less money and infinitely more busy. Swear I learnt fuck all Japanese while I worked there due to being so drained always.

I'm well aware of how lucky I am and am truly appreciative.
>>
>>377600736
Apologies for my spelling mistakes. Quite tired and using my tiny iPhone to post in bed.
>>
>>377600736

It's nice to hear you are doing well. How is your Japanese now? I've been in Japan for almost a year and mine is shit still. With work life in Japan, I always want to crash when I get home at the end of the day.
>>
>>377600565
I've been trying to figure that out myself. ive been trying to get my trans bf over here to visit, but idk what its gonna be like for him
>>
>>377600362
Well that's the thing, even if you know it fluently, it's not natively.

To ne quite honest, when I was learning Japanese I only ever sought out native Japanese teachers. I would do the same for German. I probably wouldn't hire a teacher for a language who is not a native speaker. Even if you can speak it fluently, there are so many nuances to language that a non-native won't pick up on. Especially the difference between certain phrases. It's just how it is, man.
>>
>>377600842
I was like that always. It's improved a fair bit in the past few months as I have time to study at work but I freely admit it's not great. For what the JLPT is worth, I'm N5 and taking N4 in December.

But as far as speaking goes, I consider myself basic, very basic, conversational. Can usually get my point across albeit with loads of grammatical errors. Would love to get to about N3 someday, N2 seems impossible at this stage.
>>
>>377600886
Isn't he talking about Asians with their first language as English?
>>
>>377600886
Well okay thanks for the help, though I believe I will still try and make my plan a success even though it's gonna be tough. Also a non-native will understand when someone doesn't get something because he was in the same position I think that's a good point to say don't you agree?
>>
>>377601015

Good luck on the N4! I haven't even thought about taking those yet. I'm hoping I get more time to study in the upcoming months.

It's annoying too because some people will be Japanese majors from the US studying abroad and they will look at me incredulously and say, "You aren't good at Japanese, but you live in Japan?", but I just respond, "You don't know that Japanese work life bro."

>>377601024

N4 is around Japanese early elementary schooler level. And ultimately only N2 and N1 give you tangible benefits, mainly N1. Consider not even taking the lower levels, it's a waste of money.
>>
>>377601240
True that.

I would love to take a month and do an intensive course, but who can just stop adult life and put it on hold for a month? Real life doesn't work that way!

Best of luck to you also, and all the best for your future. I'm off to sleep

to any teachers, does having an actual degree in english help get better paying jobs as a teacher? as opposed to some shmoe who only has a degree in psychology but took the TEFL cert?
>>
>>377601438
Okay, thanks for the tip. Is your N-level basically just something to put on your resume? Because I assume they would be able to gauge your Japanese level once they start talking to you in the interview. So, basically just to get your foot in the door?

>>377601525
Me too, but being an adult waits for no one! Thank you for taking the time to reply. I should probably sleep soon also. Good luck in future!
>>
>>377601740
>Okay, thanks for the tip. Is your N-level basically just something to put on your resume?

Mainly. Japanese universities also want you to have N2 or better yet N1.

Sounds like you didn't take any level yet. It's a passive comprehension only test. Vocab, grammar, reading and listening. So by passing it you prove your passive Japanese level. Then they'll test your active (speaking) with an interview.
>>
>>377601890

Lmao, this is the lie that JET faggots tell to reassure themselves that hey aren't massive failures. Salaryman work life has changed a lot since the 90s and even more so since that Dentsu girl committed suicide on Christmas. I have 0 core time which means I can go to work and leave work at any time as long as I put in the 8 hours a day.

>mandatory drinking sessions with your colleagues
You mean the awesome events where once every two weeks my superiors take us out to izakaya and strip clubs and pay for absolutely everything? Yeah, I'll continue enjoying it.

I want to spend a few years in Japan but JET seems to be the only really decent choice

Anyone have any advice?
>>
>>377605906
If you're doing it for more than a year or two, you're doing it wrong. Leave the English teaching to the youngins and work on an actual career.
>>
>>377606403
>JET
>"""working holiday"""
Lol yeah I'm sure future employers are going to be really interested in how you got a shit degree and didn't know what to do in life so you pissed away 3-5 years teaching children phonetics.
>>
>>377606460
Apply directly to one of the many private schools not associated with jet. There are plenty that will help you get your visa and assist in the moving process.
>>
>>377606593
What kind of work do you do?

>>377606593

>>377606460

My company doesn't "send" high level people. They leave because they feel like it. The people that get "sent" places are the young single guys because they're too low level to say no and everyone else wants to stay home with their families. Business trips are usually really fucking boring unless you get lucky.
>>
>>377607406
Then there's still plenty of time for you to figure out your superiority complex.
>>
>>377605949
I don't like my coworkers, but I would definitely go to a strip club with them if my boss paid for it. Japan, or at least your company, sounds dope.
>>
>>377607654
Everyone really fights hard for overseas postings where I work. These guys are senior, experienced employees too (not the managers though)
>>
>>377607873
It depends on the destination for us. I work for a defense contractor, so half the time you can go to places like Japan or Germany, and the other half you end up in some shithole where you can throw a rock in any direction and hit a combat zone. The people that take traveling positions usually have to visit all of those at some point, so the nastier places tend to make people not want to do it.

Other than that, you're just gonna go visit a bunch of boring office buildings in probably the worst parts of the east coast.

I imagine the true commercial world tends to be a bit more exciting.
>>
>>377608378
Same with my side. I'm not actually in the private sector either, I work in the foreign ministry. The American and European posts are fought over tooth and nail while anything middle eastern or African has much less competition. Yours truly got stuck in south Asian affairs at HQ
