I enjoyed DD, but I've also played that game to the death already and can't get any more enjoyment out of it. I wish it was easily moddable like Skyrim, so I can play through more contents. I don't even mind so long as I can get more places to fight at.

On topic though:
Yeah, greatsword is decently fun in DD, and the big charge attack is satisfying. Unfortunately, you just spam air attacks all day on anything that's challenging, so it's not really guts.

It's free and has an English patch so if you have the time and desire, I'd say go for it.
There are some less-than-favorable choices since it is primarily an online game rather than a singleplayer one, but I'd say the ability to just wander around and hit things still exists.

You'll get right fucked if you fight things outside of your level range though, so less stories like finding the Drake in the grove and fighting it for 3 hours. Three pawns helps soften the blows at least.

I've played it like a few years ago. Trying to get to level 55 or whatever to unlock warrior was a pain. I heard they changed that. Is it true you can switch classes easier now?

Also, are people still nice enough to constantly update the English patch?

All classes other than the new Spirit Lancer are unlocked at the get go, and they revved up the leveling from 0 to 50~ish a lot with the main quest for a single class.
As well as adding a new feature to the much hated rage mechanic where you can now smash through a monsters "poise" and take a lot of their stamina out like that instead of having to hump a monster down.

As for the English patch, I'm quite frankly scared of the people who update it since they roll them out maybe 4 hours after the game patches itself. But I guess there's always going to be someone who's obsessive about something.
