>building bases on oil platforms

Do you know how stupidly expensive that shit is? And what advantage do they gain from this? Nothing as far as I can tell. And it only has drawbacks. You can ONLY reach these stupid things by air. If there's a massive storm, guess you can't move out of your base.

Why not just a simple base in the mountains?
>>
the oil rig already exists with lots of infrastructure
you can get there via boat, which all internal trade is done with, or by air, which isn't uncommon. plus it's in international waters so there's that

the mouatians? you got any idea how much a bitch it is to build something on a mountain?
>>
>>377547550
>Why not just a simple base in the mountains?
Do you know what the "Sans Frontières" in "Militaires Sans Frontières" means? You're not "Sans Frontières" if you live on someone's soil.
>>
>>377547550

Are you under the impression that oil rigs cant move?
>>
>>377547550
This is probably bait but as >>377548237 said, the purpose of building in international waters was so that they wouldn't be in any country's jurisdiction.
>>
>>377547550
International waters, you stupid fuck
>>
Why not build in Antartica in some unclaimed zone?
>>
Is there a hurricane stupid enough to fuck with an oil tycoon? You are not going to tip over an oil rig sweetie.

For a 'nation of soldiers' it makes decent sense, up until they get a base of operations in Zanzibar Land. You just have to assume that they really do turn enough of a profit to expand their base 10 times over and run all that R&D and shit.

I know it was the Cold War and this is a fantasy-/k/ universe but Kaz is the real hero of the game, running all the expense accounts like that.
>>
>>377549620
>Kaz is competent enough to keep the entirety of Mother Base funded and functional
>also has enough free time to start a burger chain venture
>>
>>377549117
Most of their contracts would be in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Also the Seychelles are apparently a historically notorious area for spooky black ops/international espionage shit, and Kojima probably read about it in some Tom Clancy book and made a note of it.
>>
>>377549786
It fucking kills me that Konami didn't get any tie-ins with Red Robins or Whataburger or somewhere for MGSV themed burgers. If they could turn a bunch of 7-11s into Kwik-e-Marts for the Simpsons movie, they could at least shill some burger patties.

Lol that's cute
>>
>>377547550

Its fiction anon, no need to think about it too hard.

I would imagine the majority of us didn't think about that once we got all of our struts built the first time and were able to sit back and watch our mother base sustain itself.

Well unless you deployed with too-expensive stuff on a regular basis that is.

Easy to hide.
Mobile.
International waters.
Multipurpose.

Why WOULND'T you want a base offshore?
>>
>>377551272
bad picture though, the reason sea launch launches from the sea is so it can go for the much cheaper equatorial launch

I don't think Oil Platforms can move, anon.

I know. Was just an illustrative pic.
>>377551372
You think they build platforms at sea and just leave them there?
>>
>>377551372
>>377551461
not to mention there's an entire class of mobile oil platforms used to drill smaller deposits and move between them when they're depleted
>>
>>377551272
>Why WOULND'T you want a base offshore?

Because Oil platforms cost 10 billion dollars.
>>
>>377551372
Yes and no. Some are designed for temporary/seasonal projects, and some are permanent but can still be detached and relocated.

Those fuckers can be designed to last decades and decades, it's worth more to move existing ones than build new ones every time you have a new petroleum pocket discovered.
>>
>>377551623
Typically you would buy a platform from an oil company that doesn't want it anymore.
>>
>>377551623
even the most modern deep water drilling platforms struggle to reach a billion

http://oilpro.com/q/436/how-much-does-it-cost-to-build-a-drilling-rig
>>
>>377551648
It was a cool idea in Peace Walker and actually made snse since they were a poor mercenary group and were given the rig forr free, later building it up with earned funds and stolen goods. Kojima just got lazy in MGSV and reused the idea without caring if it made sense.
>>
>>377551861
That is a lot of fucking medals.
>>
it would be a lot easier though to simply refurbish a large cargo ship into a base rather than bothering with an oil rig

has the benefit of being able to move around easier
>>
>>377547550
Rule of cool.
>>
>>377552087
A ship wod need more resources than a rig though.
>>
>>377552087
Oil platforms can hold more than cargo ships because they're stationary, which also helps if you want to attack ships or aircraft to it. They also can't capsize during bad weather.

I think a lot of shit happened in the design process of Peace Walker/MGSV that Kojima regrets. All these ideas he thought were super cool but was already committed to in PW, that he decided 'fuck it I'll just use them in V anyway'.

Peace Walker should have been MGSV. If nothing else, at least give V a big setpiece environment like we've come to expect from MGS, like Shadow Moses or Grozny Grad. A stupid african jungle and mud afghan huts don't feel like MGS.

>>
>>377552215
capsizing a modern day cargo ship is really fucking difficult and virtually only happens when someone fucks up badly loading the cargo

and attaching ships or aircraft would not be particularly hard during good weather and nobody tries to attach a ship to an oil rig during bad weather anyways
>>
>>377552243
Just go on a visa interview while selecting all the questions about terrorism and smuggling to "yes"
>>
>>377552319
Yeah, Kojima did say there was stuff in PW he wish he could have explored more. Funny how all of the PW elements in MGSV are worse than when they were in PW though.
>>
>>377552393
>The accident in temperatures of -17C at around 14:00 local time (0200 GMT) in the Sea of Okhotsk happened as the rig was being towed from the eastern peninsula of Kamchatka to Sakhalin by an icebreaker and a tug.
>>
>>377552483
One-way ticket to shitposting jail.
>>
>>377552215
smaller oil rigs hold much less than the average cargo ship
and large oil rigs are few in between and HEAVILY monitored (which would be an issue for any black ops organization)
>>
>>377547550
It was boring. I wanted a regular military base so we could have fun mini games and see some cool scenery.

If you want to argue about staying in international waters, you can just say Miller used what was left of the funds to buy an island that Zero used to own for secret shit.
>>
>>377552518
It's not surprising given that outside of superficial polish/presentation PW is largely elements that portable ops did way better

>>
>>377553041
You joke, but I'm serious. Stuff like recruiting soliders, enemy AI, level design and boss fights were all done better in portable ops objectively, and it also didn't completely fuck up the chronolgy of the series by having tech in the past that makes the stuff in the future games look like shit (and then go "lol the patriots covered it up" to try and justify it)

also PW is a game literally made for children, which is why it has monster hunter mechanics, a stun rod instead of a knife, no smoking and a pixel aesthetic

>>
>>377553271
The worst thing about PW is that all the bosses are standard shit you'd find in a typical western shooter

At least games like MGS1 gave vehicle fights some sort of gimmick and were relatively novel at the time. Nowadays it always feels like you're fighting tanks or dude wearing a lot of armor with a mini gun
>>
>>377553337
That's where the hole leading to the inner world inside the earth is, dude. That's why you're not allowed to fly over Antarctica. The Russians are always trying to gain control of that shit and it's a constant power struggle between them and the US.
>>
>>377553271
You need to realize only a few people still come here that played Portable Ops when it was relevant

These people will think you're talking about Peace Walker
>>
>>377553837
I can confirm that I never played PO. Never owned a PSP, and it was never on an HD collection, and there are a lot of memes about it not being canon anymore.

It does have my favorite MGS song though, so I guess I should find an emulator or something.

Nigga, how many civillians are flying around helicopter gunships? This shit is meant for traffic stops, fighting civillian labors, and shit like that. Of course it'd get blown the fuck out by military hardware. It's like whining that a police car can't take out a tank.
