There are 3 legal levels of discrimination in the U.S.
1. Rational Basis- just have to say why it's ok to discriminate. eg. only 18yos are allowed to buy cigs
2. Intermediate level- if the discrimination is against a suspect classification, like a black person or a woman

It is illegal. You are selling a good for x price. Someone over 18 comes in and is willing to give you x amount for that good. At that point, the person selling that good needs a good reason to deny you that good.

Certain sectors have different rules (gun salesmen can deny a sale if they suspect a person might be mentally ill, a bartender could refuse service if the patron is drunk, etc.) But in this case, there's no reason not to sell the good, meaning that yes, it is illegal. Here's why:

Assuming OP sued them (which he shouldn't, since he has no proof of this) and they tried to make the claim that they didn't sell to him because they feared he would give it to a minor, Gamestop would have to prove why they believe this. Somewhere down this proof, they would eventually use OP's sex or orientation as a reason to deny him the sale. There, they would lose.
