There are a couple games which creaty a spooky atmosphere or make you jump, but there isnt really much in terms of being disturbing. Watch snuff instead.

I once heard about this game called Sad Satan but apparantely it's illegal and will get you locked up if you play it cuz it has lots of illegal content in it

imscared is pretty disturbing but the original game was better than the full game because the use of sound was changed for the worse later, specifically the footstep noise

If you're looking for bizarre and disturbing just look at anything by Ice-pick Lodge, Pathologic (The remake demo is out on steam and is superb) or The Void
For existential horror look at Soma
I actually define Spec-ops:The Line to be horror to some extent, at the very least its got some quite disturbing parts
I Have no mouth and must scream is great, Phantasmagoria, Clock Tower and Dark Seed are classics if you don't mind old point and clicks
Another one worth mentioning is called Bad Mojo

Pathologic is really hit and miss for a lot of people mostly miss so I'm not surprised, afterall the game isn't even designed to be fun but intentionally grueling and a slog.
It just comes down if you are interested in the world or not and you need a ton of willpower to keep on truckin' to see it till the end

It would probably have some effect, but I don't think that's quite how it works. In a game there is a separation both from the player and reality itself, so a mall "level" doesn't necessarily have the same impact as a real mall.
That is to say, playing a multiplayer game alone produces the effect because even in the context of the game you expect someone to be there.

It would still be worth a shot, though I have no idea how you would keep someone playing an empty game long enough to unnerve them.

All you have to do is introduce a hub world or a common game area which is heavily populated by NPCs but have a curve ball mid-way through the game where it becomes empty.
You need to associate an area with a population, this might be why empty MMOs are quite eerie because you associate an MMO with populated locations only to be shown an empty world

Sigh, goddamnit. I know you're not the one that made that chart, but it's not "Point-and-Click" Adventure game anymore. It's just Adventure game. The Point-and-Click part was just a necessary modifier at the time to indicate that it had graphics that utilized the ability to click on said graphics. Since nobody makes text-based adventure games anymore other than a handful of losers who can't let go of the past, there's no need for the Point-and-Click part anymore. ESPECIALLY because half of them don't even use a mouse these days.

The last games that managed to frighten me were Yume Nikki and Silent Hill 3, both back when I was 15. Any recommendations for someone who hasn't gotten scared in almost a decade?
