I have read numerous lore books and even Kirkbride's writings like C0da.
The problem to me is that those are much more interesting than the stories that you play through. Even when they touch on things that should be really out there, they somehow manage to feel very stock. Alduin in Skyrim is a good example. It never feels even remotely like the god of time's end, it's just an evil dragon.
