You don't use the paid crystals to upgrade gear to 20 you use regen tokens from the multiverse. The paid crystals are for transforming gear to have a different appearance.

There's no one frame links, or any links really. Each character has around 15 strings and it's up to the players to discover which ones can be cancelled into special moves.

Correct. There is some buffer leniency so you don't have to whiff or be punished and can stop midway through a string but that only really applies offline or if the connection is really good
