What hurdle stopped your Japanese studies? If you prevailed

I never studied Japanese because i shouldn't have to learn a language to consume media.

My schools only taught German and Spanish because they're retarded.

The only hurdle is your mental.

In order to learn a language you must consume an endless amount of media, just to be able to enjoy a handful of things you care about. It just isn't possible unless you're obsessed with everything Japanese.

It takes thousands of hours, and Japanese media isn't that good. At least not worth learning the language for.

I'm almost there but the kanji is still a pretty big hurdle for me, mostly because each one has like 3 different meanings and I can't always tell when they're supposed to mean what the character represents or when they're just being used for phonetic purposes.
