RTS isn't exactly dead, it's just completely taken over by tourneyfags and they already have Starcraft 2. Companies are afraid of trying anything because you won't be able to do anything innovative, like Perimeter, Ground control, or Earth, and working for tourneyfags will just mean you'll have to iron out balance for a hundred patches, and your audience will still complain.

Having played Tekken FR many times, it's a watered down version from that of the console version.

Not all the fighters are in the home release, the arcade version only has 5 stages, and the 'arcade mode' has 6 stages. It's honestly less content that Tekken Rev had. It feels a lot like a demo, but the nice thing being that it has online ranked matches.

On most fields, You don't have to be the best to be worthy. One plumber, engineer, doctor or programmer can't do all the work in the world. That's bit different in sports/esports as there pretty much only the winners get anything. Creative fields are also somewhat on the same boat, as there the one can go big hard if they get lucky and do well. But for the most parts in life, being medicore and not a natural talent is just OK. That seems less of general fighting game changes, than just wanting a character that can parry.

Of which there are a lot of already. Examples: Ryu, Baiken, etc.

Or, if you are talking about general mechanics, Arcsys games have a resource called Burst that allows you to get out of combos. Or a lot of games have Instant Blocks.

It is neither a combo escape or a parry. Maybe it functions similar in those games, but this would be something where you could effectively be tossing punches and countering in a frenzy with neither person taking damage until one slips up. DOA2 despite being rather rough had this in its PS2 version. It was clunky as fuck and perhaps not well done, but it was there.

Think Aikido for a sort of frame of reference. Ever seen a movie where someone throws a punch and the other person grabs their arm and tosses them or pulls them into a punch. Kinda that. But unlike movies people of equal skill can end up in a series of those in sort of a rolling series of punches that get denied a connect.

Its one of the most fun fights you can have because you feel the intensity of not wanting to be the first to slip up. DOA2 almost captured that with its counter button, but didn't exactly nail it by any means. I don't play a ton of fighting games these days so perhaps its out there, but not seen it myself.

I just started playing SFV because a friend and I organised a grudge match over multiple gaming genres. And to be honest, while I always enjoyed watching high tier fighting game tournaments and stuff, I didn't realise how much fun I would have even losing. I'm trying to get better at the game and every loss feels like I did something wrong.

I've read like 160 pages of "beginners guides" for the game/fighting games in general, I feel like lots of fighters have a tutorial that amounts to "here's what the buttons do", without explaining when and how you want to use them.

Trying to practice a combo is great and all, but it would be a bit easier if I could see exactly what went wrong in my timing when it doesn't string together.

>Character variety
To be successful you need something to appeal to as many people as possible. If people want to see that big X COMBO in the corner, then they want a character that hits a lot, even if it doesn't necessarily stack up damage wise with individual hits. Some people like gimmicky characters, just for the gimmick. Also Waifus and Husbandos, having played all of the character stories for SFV almost every character is kind of adorable.

But my fighting game experience prior to 7 days ago is DOA2, Tekken 4 demo, Tekken 5, and the one for PS1 I think with the cyborg that called down a laser gun and the shirtless kid with the spear and the pig.

In high latency environments yes. In LAN, Dark Souls PvP is a thousand times more complex and skill-based then anything in Street Fighter. The 'footsies' battles in a 3D environment are actually interesting and the skill ceiling is about a skyscraper higher than it is in 2D fighters.

it's not about the combos, you can have a great combo memorized perfectly but if someone knows how to deal with the hit that starts the combo it becomes useless. It's more about tricking your opponent into it or overwhelming them and forcing them to let down their guard.

No need. What you and almost every single memeposter in this shitpost thread dont understand is that fighting games already had good variety and depth and thats all you really needed. Balancing is an issue that will forever persist in competitive games, especially good ones.

Dont try to change it, incorporate the newest tech which wasnt available in past years to make up for the bigger problems. Patching is a cinch today with online and new updates as well.

Make them solid, completed games with a good amount of content. Dont be salty niggers who wanna "reinvent" a genre just because you cant get good at them.

The fact that you can heal, level up, and the moves aren't designed for pvp ruins the typical mindset of what a traditional fighting game is. Then again, this is what sets it apart.

Anyways, the combat is still good in Dark Souls. Making Souls strictly a combat game without its RPG aspects sounds iffy. I mean, For Honor exists.

I think these hybrid fighting games (Dark Souls, Smash) should be embraced since there clearly is an audience for them. Unfortunately, it still leaves traditional fighters not named Street Fighter the edge to bring in new people, other than genuinely liking them.

I mean, I get that fusing combat with other genres can help people get into these things, but other than completely changing what they are, fighting games have tried almost everything. If they get too far away from making the fighting good, then there'll be no point.

This video got me thinking: When we try to make the next fighting game, it's either in the form of traditional (street fighter) or "moba"(video you showed, or like For Honor).

One of the strenghts of fighting games is the combat is highly repeatable, and quick. What kind of environment would suit that? Mobile gaming.

Imagine just sitting on the train while getting bursts of matchs from another player anywhere you go. Fighting games are actually pretty social too, since you can talk about it with others, train, watch videos of other players, etc.

I think this style of introducing fighting game players will come in the future, when we can connect with people with a mobile device that is easy to carry around but still be able to do traditional fighting game motions.

Technical limitations aside, I feel like this can work because of arcades. Arcades thrived because they were tied to as "the place you wanna relax and have fun with games". And since phones and the internet were still in their infancy, a community was built.

Of course, now that the internet and phones are here, arcades have been devastated. So why not move the market there, specifically on mobile?

Fighting games already exist on pc ofc, but it doesn't play to fighting games' strength: short matches means it'd be ideal on mobile.

TLDR: make fully functional, traditional fighters on phones that will allow you to connect and fight people without lagl. Also the phones must be able to accomodate sticks/pad somehow.

burst works because it's in a game with very long flashy combos where you can't really do anything if you get hit confirmed by a GG god

I'm not opposed to all comeback mechanisms, but they're too strong in games like modern SF, making them more shit. GG did it right for its game. Burst lets you get out of a situation where you're getting raped rather than giving you an overpowered move or an insane offensive advantage trump card. So, no, I'm not necessarily opposed to defensive tech like burst as a loser's prize.

You can balance around high damage. ST did it and many many characters were very viable.
