I had the most fun with it thanks to online play. Melee was great, I had tons of fun with it, but by the time Brawl came out people had moved away and I had more online friends, and it fit that timing perfectly.

You can mod it into Project M, which is the best smash game. It sadly died but it's still fun to play with friends or small tournaments you can set up.

That was probably a bullshit reason and the real one is they didn't have enough manhours to split between the 3DS and Wii U or enough space to cram in a story mode on the 3DS and didn't want them to feel screwed.

It's a meme at this point but, it's unbearably slow. It's aged very, very poorly in a lot of ways but that issue was there from day one, Sakurai specifically designed it that way in response to Melee coming up as a competitive game.
There's a fine line between "casualized" and "made outright worse" and the speed of the game crosses that line hard.
He wanted Brawl to be fair for all players and be more like Mario Kart, a game where everyone has an even shot because sometimes the game will just fuck you over, but Mario Kart accomplishes that without being outright boring.

Tripping is the most insane game mechanic I've ever seen. You just have a 1 in 100 chance of eating shit and dying every single time you decide to move.
Yeah I get it, it's supposed to be a wildcard factor to mix things up, but in practicality it's just frustrating as fuck.

Isn't there something called ledge trumping in 4 or some shit? I didn't stick around long enough for the tech to really develop but I know stealing the ledge is a thing in that one.
Brawl also keeps Melee's ledge mechanics, if I remember right.

I played a lot of sm4sh and I enjoyed it. Ultimately I stopped because I feel it's way too defensive, but I do still think it's a good/fun game.
If I went over to a friend's house or some shit and we had four people I'd definitely choose 4 over melee.
