The two different routes to a game being good:
1) Plot
2) Gameplay
If you go the plot route, the gameplay can be average at best because the player is invested in the character drama
If you go the gameplay route, the plot is irrelevant and can be good or bad.
The best games would have both obviously, but this explains why games like Final Fantasy are such chores because the plot is average and so is the gameplay. One has to be good to make up for the other but if both are unappealing it fails.

games can tell stories in interesting ways that can't be done by any other medium. Just depends on the game, but in most cases yeah reading a book is better but sometimes video games can do it pretty well in their own way

i like story. some of my favorite games are my favorites because of story and characters and setting Etc.
but Gameplay is all a game needs to be good.

A videogame that fails on the game part is not videogame at all. By focusing on story you're turning an active experience into something it isn't: a passive experience.

Plot and lyrics are part of what makes movies and music, movies and music, in the same way being able to control your character is as vital as having levels and visuals.
Story is the equivalent of putting QTE into your music: stupid and absurd.
