When Rare designed the Donkey Kong cast they initially planned for DK to be the classic Donkey Kong and for Diddy to be a redesigned Donkey Kong Jr.

Nintendo wasn't comfortable with the major changes to the characters because Donkey Kong Country was still an experiment at the time, so they asked for them to change the sidekick to his own character instead. As a result they became Donkey Kong III and Diddy Kong. After that it stuck, with Cranky becoming a legacy joke and Jr being phased out due to being a worthless cast member.

He is introduced as a baby in Donkey Kong Jr. He isn't good like Mario or evil like Donkey Kong, just a heroic character who loves his father.
He became a main Mario character in Super Mario Kart, where he is reintroduced as an adult.
He shows up again as a character in Mario's Tennis on virtual boy, consistent with his appearance in Super Mario Kart.
In Donkey Kong on Gameboy, he is reintroduced as a baby helping his father Donkey Kong.
These incarnations of Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr appear consistently in the Game & Watch Gallery games.
In Mario Kart 64, he is replaced with Donkey Kong from the Donkey Kong Country series to capitalize on the success of Donkey Kong Country,
In Donkey Kong Country, the main character Donkey Kong is the grandson of Cranky Kong, the original Donkey Kong, making him the son of Donkey Kong Jr.
In Mario Tennis on the N64, Donkey Kong Jr shows up again as a baby, consistent with his appearance in Donkey Kong 94. He shows up along with his grown son, Donkey Kong from the Donkey Kong Country series.
Donkey Kong Country has since fully replaced the classic Mario Donkey Kong's role, so Donkey Kong Jr has no place anymore.

It's crazy that people are still confusing these characters with each other, they have totally different designs.
"Cranky" was even redesigned to resemble this artwork even more closely. Donkey Kong III wasn't.
