What's that video game series where at first the characters were Animal Crossing-style animal people, then slowly morphed into anime girls with animal ears?
It looked kind of like Puyo Puyo.
pop'n music?

That's it. Thank you, anon.
Well now that that's cleared up, where do I start with the Puyo Puyo series? I've never played one besides Doctor Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and that was over a decade ago.

Personally I started with Puyo Pop Fever, then moved on to 15th anniversary, then 7. 20th and Fever 2 are also good but have no english patch yet. They're apparently in the works but have made no progress in years.

Thanks for your post. Is it worth playing the older ones, or are the mechanics significantly different/outdated?

It's worth playing all the games. The same for Pop'n Music, I think.

The older games are fun too, but I never really find myself going back to them. Some people do prefer them, so give them a shot. My main gripe with them is that the ai is complete shit.

Alright, thanks. Seeing Puyo Puyo Tetris got me super interested in learning to play Puyo Puyo, so I think I'll give these other games a shot first.

Have fun. Keep in mind only the ds versions of 15th and 7 have eng patches though.
