The dock just makes it stand upright and making sure there is space behind the switch for air intake. It's nothing magical, it's just to make sure that it actually gets that air.

You can, but it'll charge considerably more slowly than the included adapter. It'll still drain battery as you play in handheld mode just more slowly than if you didn't plug it in at all.
