Should certain disturbing elements of Japanese video games be removed for their Western release?
>>
>>377438986
No. Any and all censorship no matter how minor is a bad decision.
It's called respect.
>>
>>377438986
Its a cute busty girl in a bikini, how is that disturbing?
I must be one of those sick Girl Fetishists.
>>
Just rename the USA to Jewistan and stop giving them any games or entertainment, they don't deserve it.

Should Tsubasa's game get a sequel?
>>
>>377439143
She's 17 years old in the Japanese version.
>>
Depending on the target audience, yes. In America if you let your 14 year old daughter go out like that in public you would get your kids taken away by CPS.

The game shouldn't include sexualized images of her.

Well the target audience isn't american soccer moms so in this case no it shouldn't have been changed

Half of usa has age of consent set to 16.
Same with whole europe.
So what you are saying is, that decision was retarded and they appealed to few states in america?

Only if it comes with an unmutilated version of the first game.
>>
>>377438986
No. Japanese games are only purchased by people who are already into them. Changing them to appease people who were never going to buy it in the first place is stupid.

The only acceptable changes is for the sake of the ESRB/PEGI and that's because they have actual authority.
>>
Yes, the entirety of the abomination that is shin megami x fire emblem should be removed from its western release.

Should freedom of expression assure Japan can continue creating pornographics video games with heroines like this?
>>
>>377439402
You do realize more than %50 of 15-16 year olds have had sex, right? And that age goes lower, like 9-10 as you go east.
>>
Sure, I don't care.

>>377439480

>>
>>377438986
probably, like if that will make them sell better. a niche thing can get away with weird things, like sexy children, or whatever, like look at fanfic. but once it reaches a certain size you have to bland the whole thing up, otherwise someone is going to fuck with your money.
>>
>>377438986
no, ur fucking gay and will be the cause of us signing away all freedom of creativity and thought within the next 10 years and become mindless slaves free of any individuality seeking only to conform to society
>>
Nothing should be altered, and translation should be as close to 1:1 as possible.

You don't see people localizing foreign film or books. Games should be the same.
>>
>>377438986
As long as there is an option to bring the cut content back.
>>
Why is cutting a guy open more okay than someones piddle being diddled?
>>
>>377438986
Of course. Foreigners are naturally more mature and are able to be subjected to such stimuli without negative consequences. Naturally our own citizens are of weaker minds and more susceptible to being corrupted.
>>
>>377439809
You sound like you need to unEOP yourself.
>>
>>377439905
Its only okay when bad things happen to men.
>>
Doesnt matter so much if it's just fanservice. If you are rewriting a character it's a different story.
>>
>>377439218
so? that's legal in most western markets.

it's just the United States that is extra prude about everything

I agree to a degree, but localization and translation are different things. Some series like Persona is OK with just a translation, but you can't just translate rhymes and songs etc.
>>
>>377439706
I thought 12-14 year olds is now the normal time for people in the west to have sex. Due to how easily accessible sexual entertainment is
>>
>>377438986
> Should certain disturbing elements of Japanese video games be removed for their Western release?
No. It infringes upon the artistic vision of the developers.
Imagine if I sold 1984 (the book) with its ending changed to a happy one, and then had the balls to call it "a fitting localization".
>>
>>377439402
oh yeah, lets wait like a few months until she's 18 and it's a-okay morally acceptable to fuck the shit out of her through every orifice, one day sooner and it's outright blasphemy to even think of her sexually
>>
>>377440112
Localization to a degree is necessary because of culture and language stuff. Persona has issues as it still uses japanese suffixes that you wont understand unless you're a weeb
>>
>>377440021
I'm trying, anon. It's fucking hard.

>>377440112
>you can't just translate rhymes and songs etc.

That's fair, but I'd argue that it's better to preserve the content and have audiences not understand it than change the content and make it lose its meaning.

Foreign media should be used as a way to learn about their culture, not be changed to reinforce the culture it is being sold in.
>>
>>377440338
Many times the setting of a story isnt really important. Plus youd have to go out of your way to explain stuff or leave your audience slightly confused

It can depend on the context though, where either the original context being lost when seen through another culture or an alternate context is created outwith the original developer's intention.

For example: KKK Witches. Not meant to be a references to the white supremacy movement, but a western audience won't see it as any other way, so it makes sense to change the name so as not to draw a false correlation.

Would you say the English version of Dies irae should rename Reinhard Heydrich to something else?

Ostensibly he's the main antagonist, but ultimately he comes off rather sympathetic and get's a happy end like everyone else.
>>
>>377440338
What's most important is to retain the meaning and intent.
Take some language specific pun that makes zero sense in a different language. Finding a suitable pun that conveys the same meaning would be great preferable but just isn't always possible. I would rather them get the point across in a slightly jesting manner than kill the mood by being literal, or going to far and making them spout memes.
>>
>>377441170
Being easier to remember and say is more important than the name being exactly the same. Especially in JRPGs with a ton of characters
>>
>>377440672
>The Xseed guy has a shit fit over that and has his name removed from the game over a reference so minor the original devs didn't give a fuck

That's some 4kids shit, renaming Japanese Characters into Western Names just because "Westerners are too dumb to remember foreign names!".
As long as the Characters are well defined and memorable you don't even have to be a Weeaboo to associate their names with them.

>>377442209
He's the one who demanded they remove his name, though.

Yes. That was my point. He threw a tantrum and took his name off the most insipid stupid harmless change a game could make. Hence "Pick your battles"

They didn't censor themes, designs or concepts. No one is being robbed of anything special. It was just a dumb sign in some ass end corner of the game you're not even going to see. A change so minor that they original devs did it without being prompted and don't care.

He's just coming off like a butt hurt weeb whose refusing to comprise for the greater good.

That's legal in USA too.

Even in the USA it's easier to just pull a Senran and not outright state her age.

Seriously if Senran Kagura can make it over there's no reason this had to be so brutalized.

Not like that's a good thing, now

Depends on the reason. If it's like the inkling girl in mario kart 8 then yeah it makes sense of it to be cut/changed but censoring out boobs in a Rated M game (game got censored so badly that the age rating was decreased to T in NA) was stupid.
>>
>>377438986

>>377447853

Why the hell would a western themed world have a town named ShiroYuki or whatever. Sometimes you're just stuck out of necessity and basic logic
>>
>>377441317
No read his post again you dumb faggot. He's saying that the most important part is understanding the meaning; from the meaning you can derive the context and gain insight into another culture. That's the point of consuming something from another culture. Localization excises is this completely and is intended as food for the unintellectually curious for easy consumption.

Localization is a dishonest, archaic concept and has no place in a global world.
>>
>>377438986
Is the game good? Actually been considering it for a while

Puritanism was a mistake x2. A lot of retarded amerilard sensibilities find their roots there.

>>377452494
Not like they weren't wrong about the shit that the Catholic church was trying to bring around, most of it went against the teachings of their religion, but when they just wanted to practice in their own way, they were persecuted for it.

If the Catholic church weren't fucking morons, it would be a little sect that no one gave a shit about, instead it spawned the most annoying shit heads that constantly think their opinion means more then everyone else.
