The ultimate problem with the PS4 is that its games are timed. And I don't mean that as "timed exclusives", but as in that it itself is a timed platform. It lacks the necessary backwards compatibility to play older games on a modern platform, and it itself will only last for so long.

I think the PC is the most necessary platform in that regard; it doesn't lose its games each generation essentially. Most games on it scale with hardware, so for instance years from now you can play Bayonetta at 8k once 8k televisions are a thing. It makes games future proofed, so its infinitely backwards compatible while still getting most games that come out nowadays.
Even the Japanese games that used to be a Playstation only thing is no longer what once was. Excepting Atlus and Vanillaware, its gotten to the point where if its coming out and its not a first party title, its likely either on or going to be on PC, and if you have to choose between a PS4 or PC version of a game, PC is simply the way to go since a game will typically look and run better and offer more options for consumers whilst being future proofed if you ever want to play it in the future.

Why can't I play Little King's Story on a Switch? Why can't I play Vanquish on a PS4 or an Xbox One?

At least the 3DS and Vita can be argued as platforms worth owning thanks to their portability. Maybe the Switch too.

I honestly can't afford to buy all the games that keep coming out that I want. Trails in the Sky the Third just came out. Vanquish is very close to getting a release. Danganronpa V3, Tokyo Xanadu Ex+, Trails of Cold Steel, Ys VIII, and Valkyrie Drive are all coming in the near future. I'm still playing Nier Automata and Atelier Sophie from a couple months ago.

Deus Ex Mankind Divided is an example of this. People pick max settings (including really expensive AA) and then wonder why their computer can't run it.

Just as an example, if you go to Final Fantasy Type 0 HD's steam page there'll be terrible reviews saying it doesn't run well. this is actually a good point. backwards compatibility is a really big deal if you consider yourself a gaming enthusiast. the ps2, og xbox, 360, ps3 (certain models), xbox one, wii, wiiu all had back compatibility. don't know about the switch but i assume i doesn't because of the physical media it uses. pc has back compat obviously. sony really bottled it when it comes to those older games. it's just not worth it to buy both a ps3 and ps4 which will probably cost over $400 minimum.

as for myself, i'm playing through kotor 2 on the pc and catherine on my roomates xbox one slim. prey is probably the only new gen game i'm playing right now.
