What's your opinion on RPG maker games? Lazy cashgrabs or

Oh they‘re much more ethical and honest compare to the modern dlcs & preorder practice we see from game companies.

Literally just visual novels pretending to have gameplay.

The only reason anyone here plays them is to fap to the art. When a game has unique, detailed character portraits but everything else uses default assets, it's extremely obvious. You could have the exact same experience by just decrypting the files and opening the art folder.

Usually neither. It's pretty rare to find one selling for more than five bucks, and they don't sell well in the first place because there's so many free alternatives. Most of them aren't "underrated" either because they get about as much praise as they deserve, which is very little for most of them.

Most RPG Maker games are just passion projects. I like reading the author/developer descriptions and notes because you can really tell how much the person wanted to make their own RPG.

There are some legit good games out there.
The problem is how easy it is to come out with something finished, meaning that every retard who doesn't grasp a thing from game design goes and releases something "finished".
The engine is far better than most games turn out to be, it's flexible enough to craft some interesting games but it's very rarely done so.

Try the VX Ace trial version on Steam. It's free and you got to use all features except for scripting on a limited rate to make a quick game and get to know the engine.
The older ones are very cheap as well, 2003 is pretty good.

If you take enough time to find plugins/scripts you can make whatever the fuck you want. There are scripts to make zelda-like combat, SRPG battles and even some with roguelike movement/attack mechanics.
There are thousands of tutorials so it's pretty easy to get started.

Depends on which version you get. This guy https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpkxBoGGaFpnGtni3PCwHRg is currently developing a tactical battle system which is very in depth but has more in common with Disgaea than Fire Emblem.
It often just requires some basic event/database knowledge to implement those things but as someone who played a lot on Unity I guarantee it's 90% simpler.

Really liked OFF, LISA, Oneshot, Ib, To the Moon

I miss the Sunshine (suprising, it is game about fucking space fighting during gigantic cataclysm with exploding stars, not a fucking romance thing) is really good and free. It have fun combat - ship controlling in turn based system.

It also have personality slider which actually change sentences you can pick (one of them was rationality and imagination. Second about begin law/lawless and a third I don't remember), three races to pick and actually finished game in 5 episodes.

Most are untranslated so there isn't a good way to judge the majority of them.

From the ones I've played, though, they tend to be very disappointing. Most just use the RPG elements as a way to draw the game out to 10+ hours long. They make things grindy and require high stats as a barrier of entry. Mind you, there are a lot of shitty platformers as well, but the excuse of "not necessarily as bad as a shit game" isn't a very convincing one.

There are actually some pretty fucking decent classic JRPG style games. I'm talking non-porn, non-horror shit. I haven't heard of any good modern ones, mostly cause people are selling their RPG Maker games on Steam now.

Since we're on the topic of RPG maker games, there was one I remember from a long time ago. I think you needed to buy it in order to play it, which was unheard of before Steam started selling them.

If you are not of sufficient intelligence to read schematics, consult with professionals, learn to use tools, find funding to buy the metal ingots and have the required strength and dexterity to hammer out the press, then you probably don't have enough life experience to write.

Without the capability to learn you just end up with Bioware tier writing on the matter because you are just fudging your knowledge and can't ever go into details. However, if you do have that experience and start to write those novels and short stories you will have the most amazingly detailed sections of printing and may even make interesting intricate stories centered around the press itself.

Same thing with game design. If you understand how your engine works to the point you could make an engine, then you are probably smart enough to figure out how to make the game you want to make and implement the features you want to implement.
