If you're limited to the touchscreen playing platforms like Crash Bandicoot 2 or Super Mario 3 is fucking hell, but for Turn Based RPGs it works wonderfully.

So far I've completed the GBA Version of Tales of Phantasia, a HackROM of Pokémon FireRed called "Nameless FireRed Project" and Final Fantasy I (DoS), currently going through Final Fantasy II (DoS) on my shitty Alcatel Pixi 3.5''.

With enough practice, could a person be just as good with a touchscreen as with a physical controller?

My gut tells me no, but maybe not. At a desperate point in my youth, I played all my emulated 8 and 16-bit games with a keyboard. I was able to beat some reasonably hard games like Castlevania and Strider.

Maybe with enough practice a touchscreen controller could be just as good as a physical one?

Only games I've found that are fun are Korean/Chinese games that offer F2P models that lure in whales, and the few others are just built to advertise the programmers to the world market and die the second anyone is offered a legitimate job. They're gamified advertising platforms.
