Dunno yet. Hate the isekai art style where character noses disappear when facing the camera, armor design and protagonist seem terrible and for every cool thing in the trailer there were 2 things I didn't like.

Tales of games are even worse offenders and people loves them. Plus Monolith games have always put way more emphasis on the worlds than on their character's design and since both previous games were critizised for having weirdly modelled faces they went for something safe on this one.

I mean, there's a fucking huge flying whale we will probably be able to explore or mount or both. I don't see what's not to be excited about.

Xenoblade 2, designwise, looks like something we've seen a million times before. It looks like a Nep game, or Artificial Academy 2, or Akiba's Strip, or any number of genericly weeby games.

Xenosaga had some ugly 3d models. Xenoblade had some ugly 3d models. Xenoblade X had some ugly 3d models. But, as unappealing as the human models in those games were, they at least weren't generic as well. I'll take Black Tar over Time to Fight any day. If I wanted to play a game that played it safe, I wouldn't be a fan of Takahashi.

Well, because it's even more generically animu-weeb (particularly the moe end of the spectrum) than usual. Definitely more-so than any previous Xeno game so far imo. But in the end it's just the routine growing pains with Monolith's character designs. Xenoblade X was my 2015 GOTY and I was absolutely perplexed by the faces at first.

Tales doesn't cop flack because it's consistent with it's visual style.

Is this one of those games where I don't need to play the others and I can just jump in?

I just think people should cut it some slack. The only generic thing about this game so far is the character faces, which in the context of the series is not even generic at all since they changed for each one of their games.

There's lots to look forward to in the game besides "i don't like the faces" and monolith soft have proven themselves as way more than competent at making cool games.

That'll be a lot more apparent when there's more than 2 minutes of footage. I did like the airship settlement and the urban area with enemies running around on the ground floor, though.

In my opinion, I believe Xenoblade is going to split into 2 different sub-series.

You'll have the numbered Xenoblades that will functional similar to that of Final Fantasy. Each game having it's own world/universe etc. These games will likely focus on narrative and characters. I also think they'll share the same more anime-ish style.

Then we'll have the X series which will be more focused on gameplay, multiplayer, and exploration. I think these games will go for the more anime-ish realism that X had. It's also possible that these games will continue the same narrative but that's yet to be determined. Maybe only a couple of them will be about mira. idk tho

As long as they keep X style enemy, armor and alien designs I'm fine with this. If they make things like multiplayer and skells actually work that's great too.

Maybe that's because they've been using the same modelers and drawers since 2000 and neither of them have made a single attempt to try and upgrade their department to at least try to make their characters look better.

I mean have actually sat back and examined how fucking cliche Aizen, Laphicet, Sorey, Mikleo, Laliah, Edna and Eleanor look? They legitimately look like they're from early to mid 2000's anime but with a redux.

The real reason why Tales games don't get flack for their generic art style is because their fan base will gladly gobble their trash up as long as it has some form of gay/lesbian pandering and a story that at least attempts to not fuck it's own ass like Zesteria did.
