D1 game play was fine, classes were fine. It was enjoyable despite all its story and world related massive shortcomings.

D2 seemingly fixed the story and world related issues and fixed some quality of life issues. That's all D1 needed.

That said, you should never pre-order DLC until you get a feel for the base game.
