Nintendo baited them into targeting the 3DS's $250 price tag. The memory cards were there to make sure Sony didn't completely bleed to death like on the PS3. Of course it failed miserably, because the 3DS was cheap and Nintendo had already dropped the price by the time the Vita came out.

Do you find both games to be good? Because I find them to be rehashed as fuck. After playing GTA 3, VC, and SA, I really don't think there's any other place for the series to go.

I don't have an issue with people who like western devs. I enjoyed Black Flag and Alien Isolation, for example. But I just find the overwhelming majority of western games to be reskins of the same game with just enough story attached to remind you that there is something different about them.

Right. Not like the west has outright dropped core mechanics because they couldn't grasp it, like boss fights. Or streamlined level design to the point where it's just one way hallways. Or overdosed on taking away control from the player to show a lengthy popup message on how to play the game or stop the game just to drag the camera all over to what you're supposed to interact with. A detachable gamepad isn't really new, least of all one that functions independent of the tablet.

The best bet for Sony is if

a) They cram their shit with more cores and RAM if a mobile SoC hasn't surpassed the Tegra X1

b) Fund development for a mobile SoC that DOES blow Tegra X1 out of the water

c) Build a system that can house an overclocked/customized Tegra X1

Imagination Technologies did provide the Vita with a PowerVR GPU, but I doubt they'll be able to use the same tech that's been running in iPhones for the system which is also another choice. Apple has a patent on those, I believe.
