I think I remember hearing that a lot of the top Japanese engineers and programers left the video game industry from the mid 2000s because they weren't being paid very well.

If you look at the sixth generation games, Japanese games certainly looked better than the competition. Not a lot of western games from 2000-2003 really looked as good as MGS2, Gran Turismo 3, Silent Hill 2 and 3 and REmake etc

Also, it's worth noting Nier Automata targets 60fps, has a lot of enemies on screen and is an open world game. Not a particularly good contender for showcasing graphical fidelity.

Not that, anon. "Killing the industry" is a bit hyperbolic but games really should be about gameplay first. You can have a good game that looks like shit but you can't really have a good game that plays like shit. It's interactive entertainment. A prime example imo is UC4. It looks gorgeous but the story is feels drawn out because the gameplay become predictable, repetitive and boring 2/3s in. If I wanted to watch realistic gfx, I'd watch a movie and not play a "cinematic" game that runs in 24fps for "cinematic" feel.

lets be serious here, western games have better textures and in som cases better lighting but thats fucking it. Most japanese games have animations (not counting facial animations) and gameplay elements which are generations ahead of any western game.

Name one wetern open world game with as many things to do and as many physics and gameplay elemts as Zelda BotW. You simply cant. Instead you get low effort motion capture from low class actors who were rejected by hollywood. Also western devs have no imagination, no good art-style, always going for realism because they lack the magic japanese devs have.

They focus on Artstyle making their world look good, instead of trying make realism such a factor (when it's not) which comes to look brown and grey like MOST Western games tend to do.
