I've played HotS for a while. I even do now from time to time. Things to know:

>all your team exp is shared, individual carry potential is nonexistant
>most heroes have 2 viable talent builds
>fights tend to occur around main objectives since the map layout is fucking awful and plain
>most maps boil down to "get x to enable y to help you destroy the enemy towers"
>jungle is nonexistant instead you have merc camps that automatically BEEP for your enemy team and explicitly show the lane where they will be pushing in case your enemies have absolutely no awareness

Talents are fine, they add more strategy to how you build your hero.
Shrines and the nerfs to farming/buff to gold/exp from kills are the real problem.
The game stagnated into a boring teamfight after teamfight meta, leaving it the only viable strat instead of having serval viable ones.

Shrines are good. They were too strong on high-ground but were nerfed last patched. They make laning a lot better.

Bounty runes are a godsend for supports and junglers, super nice. The "more runespots" are just in the four corners of the jungle and only spawn bounty.

Scan is okay, counterplay for smoke ganks. The map changes are great. More jungle. And finally dires rosh advantage isn't overwhelming.

Overall great changes. They fucked up a bit recently re: the jungle (creeps only spawning every other minute. Was a bad change), and the respawn talents were bullshit. But they fixed it.

It's literally a cut down version of the Moba genre where it's just teamfights straight away. It removes all the dumb grinding and laning and goes directly to spamming skills. What you need to know

You have two types of gold, one is from pve (monsters, unreliable) and one is from killing players (reliable). If you die you'll lose only pve gold. If you are close enough to enemy player while he dies you are rewarded gold as well.

It's good to bind stop somewhere, you can cancel animation of abilities before they are cast and bait people into hooks and so on.

Wards. They save lives.

Bind your abiliies to quick cast in the options menu, but leave two item slots for the standard setting so you can doubletap some items like force staff or teleport (town portal, TP) scroll.

Speaking of town portal scroll, ALWAYS, fucking ALWAYS keep at least one in your inventory. I don't care what you do, just keep one in your inventory.

You can enable right click friendly attack in settings and is easier to play the game this way. If a friendly creep has low health, you can deny it from enemies by killing it. Any creep (monster) that dies in a small radius close to your hero, even neutral one and even your friendly creeps will give you XP. If you are playing on offlane, you need to stand close to leech XP and deny first. If you are a carry on safe lane you need to last hit enemy creeps first. You can kill team players/towers with your own attacks if they are affected by some specific effects and have low health.

Wards are the most important item in the game. If you are support, buy them.

Gankers like pudge or night stalker will give you the most experience in the game. By playing these heroes (pudge as support and night stalker as offlaner) you'll learn everything about ganks, positioning, skill shots and game timers. And of importance of wards.

If you want to play hero that relies on illusions (like phantom lancer or any hero that uses manta) it's a good idea to set in settings that new units are not added under your control right away. Rather set a button to control your hero and another button for controlled units.

As weird as this may sound, I believe the "goodness" of a game has only a partial impact on the watchability of a product.

I feel like watching video games is a relatively new phenomenon and very few companies are designing shit to make it possible to watch. Basically only the biggest and richest companies can afford to design their interface to be palpable to a viewer.

Hearthstone is up there because it fucking works. Say what you will about the game it looks good on a screen. Go into a bar, pub, or some sports hall and you'll see that stupid Kino shit or whatever on TV screens all the time - they have those shit animations and stuff but to the people watching, that's super hot tech. Or go to casinos and see how they're constantly evolving their interfaces to be attractive.

Hearthstone is like that. It's impressive in visual and audible design and it's easy to follow. Whether or not Blizzard designed it to be like that is up for discussion because they're generally super fucking competent about that sort of thing but be assured in the future it will be a conscious design decision.

Like, look at all those titles. They're nice to look at and that is more important than anything in this realm. Even shit we don't care about like Smite and Rocket League - they are legitimately pleasant to look at and listen to.

Magic is a better game than Hearthstone but here's the deal, they've utterly and wholly neglected having a client that both looks good and doesn't fucking crash so nobody wants to stream it. In fact, I would dare say that player population aside, you're going to get more people watching you play Hearthstone over Magic because Hearthstone doesn't want to make you fall asleep because of how much is going on.
