they work best as a pair of course, but 9S was created for solo operations on top of being high-end model to begin with

I really like the context side materials gave to their relationships. 2B was just a broken, lonely, constantly suffering soldier before she met him and he was a nihilistic murderbot capable of massive destruction because he saw nothing of value in his life.
They has changed after meeting each other and their love to each other is what also allowed N2 and Pods to understand emotions at the very end of a game, which ultimately leads to happy ending.

This side material stuff doesn't sound like it should be side material.
