The issue with this is if it's an action the character frequently has to perform, then it gets kind of annoying for the player to sit through a cutscene or dialog every time. Like in a Battlefield game it's way easier to show the engineer just hammering when he's fixing a helicopter because a more realistic approach would take forever

Like what? Please describe some kind of field repair that would require any level of "work" outside of just swapping the busted parts. Using the computer example, I can't remember a single instance in the last decade where swapping a broken component required anything more than plug and play. Just a few weeks ago I took an M.2 drive from a ded laptop, dropped it into a new desktop build I had recently finished, and it booted into Windows from that M.2 drive without a single issue following that. A complete moron could figure this stuff out these days.

Well, I used to be an intern on the electric maintenance team at a sugar factory. The reason stuff is replaced is because the factory can't really afford to stop for repairs.

The fastest way to fix something is replacing what's broken with a new part. It does take actual knowledge to identify problems and replace the stuff. The repairs are usually done later and the repaired piece is either put back or kept as a spare, depending on the conditions, unless it requires some specialist knowledge or tool, in which case it is sent to the manufacturer or whoever repairs it.

The only times when repairs were made on site were for big stuff that can't be moved, expensive stuff with no spare or simple stuff like tightening some screws and recalibration sensors.

Sure, the game could show the engineer character later trying to fix some broken down valve, but usually there are other priorities like aliens trying to kill everyone.
