each day is split into a day section and a night section. if you choose to hang out with a person it moves time forward and you rank up in closeness to them. if you rank up with a girl enough you can romance them. there are also social stats like intelligence that are required to be of a certain level in order to rank up certain party members. you increase these social stats by spending time grinding them (instead of hanging out with somebody in that same time period)

also the days people are available to hang out on vary, you can't just hang out with the same person every single day in a row. additionally, sometimes you will need to hang out with somebody more than one time before attaining the next close-ness rank. you can't hang out with Naoto until near the end of the game and need max intelligence to do so, so if you want to romance her, you have to carefully manage your time when she becomes available in order to rank her up enough in the available time.
