Is there anything like Elder Scrolls games that has actual depth to the story?
I'm looking for an RPG that is written well, and has a fun open world.

You've read Vivec's Sermons, no? How about the Heretics' side of the Nervar story? Dagoth Ur's? Do you know what Dagoth Ur's doing to the people, what he is, why he's doing all of this?

How about the Daedric Princes' perspective on the events of the game? The Nine Divines'? The Emperor's?

Game's got some depth, yo. Text will do that.

If I knew ANYTHING about animation creation, I'd animate each enemy model to display some sort of dodging move right after and just before an attack, just enough to help the misses make a tad more sense, visually. Doesn't have to be stark, just a step or two back, then forward again sort of like fencing.
>>

Not even depth though. It's just doing a lot of reading to actually know why people are doing something.

I wish I could find this one image showing a guy comparing Morrowind to Daggerfall as if it was like today with Oblivion and Skyrim. Apparently Beth has quite the history with dumb down their games and lie about it.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter, Morrowind might be a bit stoic, but it isn't like those *miss* fags like to paint it.

i love morrowind to death but i could not be asked to read all those fucking books. stuffing all the lore of the game into flat text is the laziest shit.
>>
>>377266272
Eh, Books have their use if used in a clever manner. Not just to eject infodumps, but to flavor the world itself since the books themselves are in it and of it. So there are books that are just wrong and incorrect, and others that are very biased. And some are just stories that are fun to read but telling of the world at the same time.
>>
My favorite Book/Book set in Morrowind is probably the Poison Song.

I suppose that's not a popular choice, but they were a really good read.

i get that and i think its cool the books are there, but when im playing a videogame i have zero interest in sitting down and reading books, that's why i prefer audiologs instead.

>stuffing all the lore of the game into flat text is the laziest shit.
That's what makes TES lore so appealing compared to games that just shove everything into a codex/bestiary/item descriptions: the text is almost never flat. Every single book is the words of a character in the game and represents their beliefs and perspective on the world. There are even several genuinely well-written short stories that manage to entertain and educate at the same time, especially the "historical fiction" types like 2920, Dance in Fire, Argonian Account, The Wolf Queen, etc. which while often exaggerated or dramatized are still based in truth.
>>
>>377266749
sauce?
>>
>>377268069
We're playing video games for immersion and gameplay. If the player needs to read "books" to immerse itself or get to know opinions of some npcs, I think the game is poorly designed.
>>
>>377268224
Well thats why no one gives a shit what you think. This whole thread has been people adequately describing why morrowind has good lore and you just keep whining about reading books. Go away.
>>
>>377268224
I disagree. In an actual world there would be such books. The player never needs to read them and can get plenty of depth without them, but they add to it regardless.
>>
>>377268224
Back to Cowadoody, Chad.
>>
>>377268224
So the Souls games are some of the most poorly designed games ever then as it's not even books, just some item descriptions.
>>
>>377268498
It's not just me whining, I saw some other anon whining about it, so obv there are more than 1 anon

>>377268742
Idk, I never liked them or played enough of them

>>377268578
I'd argue that there are games with better interaction with the world/npcs that morrowind (the animations alone are bad in that game), and for that reason alone the morrowind is pretty low on my list.
>>
>>377268224
I agree with you there. I'm just talking about lore and worldbuilding, not the actual story. In Morrowind's case the books are supplemental: you learn the history and beliefs of most every relevant faction and character from dialogue and quests. Take Vivec himself, for example. If you want to go super deep you can read the 36 Sermons and try to decode all the riddles and layers therein, but the Tribunal Temple quests and pilgrimages you actually perform in-game give you plenty of history about his place in the world. The main quest even touches on the dissident priests - subversives of the Tribunal Temple - giving you a hint as to the conflicts surrounding the living gods without having to read The Progress of Truth or the sermons or anything else.

>>377268498
At some point you got lore and story mixed up. The plot of the game is what happens from beginning to end, the lore is just background information. Morrowind has a good plot but amazing lore. When OP asked for a story with depth he probably meant more about the plot and perhaps the impact the player has on it, in which case there are many RPGs with more reactive ones than Morrowind, even if it's the best Bethesda has to offer.

I picked up this recently but I've found it really underwhelming.
>world building is uninspired and generic
>very few dialog options; can't even refuse many quests
>can't freely talk to companions
>the writing is not amazing
I'm not being immersed,

In comparison, I just finished playing Planescape Torment for the first time and I loved it. I'd hoped BG would be in the same vein, but it's less interesting in every aspect.

I've heard the BGII is superior to the first, but in what ways? Is it more immersive, or does just improve on less important elements, like the combat and UI?
Is it actually worth finishing BG, or do people only still play it so they can understand the context and story of BGII?

Both have you travel the overworld with an overarching quest, which at times is just an excuse for you to travel to different towns, meet different people and see how different groups are handling different things in the context of the world. Each town has their own quests and as you progress through the game some of the earlier towns will have new quests open up as well. Like Fallout everything gets its own spotlight in the end and sometimes minor choices or actions can have massive long-reaching consequences for the quests. Both talking and fighting are important. You can get through the entire game killing things, but you'll miss out on most of the best parts. Different civilizations have their own views, goals and philosophies to explore and develop. The race you choose can affect their reactions to you as well. Like in Fallout if you have a low Intelligence, you're a retard in dialogue.
You control the main character and have companions as well, although like Fallout you don't directly control your companions. You actually have less control than in Fallout and they're pretty boring in combat, I'd prefer if they were more like BG companions. Some of them do have quests or interesting views and dialogue though.
The game, in my opinion, gets a bit more boring in the second half. I found myself rushing to get to the ending in the end.
Different styles aren't well balanced against each other. Magic is generally much better than tech builds. The best options are Melee, Magic and Throwing. Some tech things are useful but the investment is usually high. Like Fallout some stats like Beauty are mostly worthless.

I had fun with it and I recommend giving it a shot.
>>
>>377273707
>>377272874
Oh and it's by Troika so watch out for Sewers-syndrome:

Just because it has a lot of interesting and well thought out dialogue doesn't mean you can get by through dialogue alone. Invest in combat too.
>>
>>377273707
>>377273782
Thanks, I think I'll finally try it.

>>
>>377269618
Having played both, there's 2 things that make BG 2 vastly superior to the former

1.) More interesting quests
2.) Way more freedom

2 has a lot more to do, while also letting you choose what order it's done in. In BG 1 you basically follow a flow chart of going south, then around cloakwood, then straight to the city. The whole time you're doing gay and easy quests like "Clear the mines of kobolds."

2 opens with you in a much more interesting city, and a quest right nearby with some weird circus. It only gets better from there.
>>
>>377259345
better hope you don't get the wall follower glitch 30 hours into the game and lose all progress

Yes I'm mad
>>
>>377275614
2 is a higher level game and thus has more interesting and important quests.

One nice thing about 1 though is that you actually get to explore the world from place to place.

I've hardly read all of them (though I really do like the Commentaries on the Mysterium Xarxes), my favorite book in Morrowind is probably Azura and the Box. To me it seems like one of the most important, for really understanding the game's story.
