Nigga, I think OP fell for the /v/ cool aid way too hard. I used to chug it too but as I come to this board less and less I notice how much happier I get.

/v/ is good for getting you into older games like Deus Ex and Thief, as well as exposing yourself to genre's you might have shut yourself off from like (in my case) JRPGs and animay games. The only game /v/ made me buy that I thought was bad in a way was Witcher 1, and that was due to pacing, not bad combat, and it did get pretty great towards the end.

Stop falling for /v/'s incessant cynicism about fucking everything.

Honestly, I think that's the main reason why gaming exploded so much and so quickly. We went from the relatively sedate 80s to a decade with nonstop major advancements and excellent games.

The 90s as a whole was a mixture of 2D gaming perfected and 3D gaming in its infancy, but also in its most formative and fundamentally innovative years. Basically, the industry was in a really exciting period. A true golden age, if you will. I'd say it even extends into the early 00s as 3D gaming matured significantly in execution much like 2D gaming did in the early 90s.
