Who here has an unhealthy addiction to games?

I've dropped two college classes because I'd rather be home playing games.

It's sad and stupid. How do I learn self control?

I failed literally 5 years of my life while playing video games. I won't say the reason for my failure are video games, they're just a coping mechanism.

God I hate studying so much.

I don't understand video game addiction.

Maybe during the golden age, but not now. Everything's low quality shit. How can you be addicted to trash?
>>
>>377210937
You know there's nothing stopping you from playing old videogames, right?
>>
OP, list all the games you've played in the past 2 weeks.
>>
>>377210761
That's not what I said. I said I would rather stay home and play games. Hence why I used I.

>>377210408
Big help, thanks.

>>377210937
Because of the nature of games now, especially. Games now have a bunch of collectibles and a competitive side to it. Enticing you to keep playing more and more.

Can anyone give me real advice on how to learn self control? I don't know what to do. It's not as simple as "Bro just stop playing games." I've been doing it my whole life and it's difficult to break something that makes me so happy. I want games to still be apart of me, I just want to reduce it to a normal amount so I don't allow it to interfere with my life.
>>
>>377210287
>It's sad and stupid. How do I learn self control?

Your parents need to throw you out on your ass so you can learn true hardship.
>>

>>
>>377210287
I'm not really one to offer advice here, but if you're having major problems getting your work done, maybe you should consider seeking counselling. Like >>377210647 said, the problem probably isn't video games themselves. There could be an underlying psychological or behavioral issue that needs to be addressed. (I'm currently using drawing as a way of coping and distracting myself from my responsibilities. Different activity, same principle). But as long as you're staying in school and getting things done (even if it's not as fast as you'd like), don't worry too much. Just don't be afraid to seek help if you think you need it.

>>
>>377211139
>>377211265
Collectibles are meaningless. Only do them if they're inherently fun or interesting (like getting vantages in Horizon: Zero Dawn). If you just want to keep yourself busy with menial shit, get a menial labor job instead.

Competition in video games is also largely empty. It can be fun, but you shouldn't invest too much time into it unless you're making money in tourneys or something (which is not just being tourney-level in skill but actively attending and so on). Instead of trying to master D.Va or whatever, try to master a subject.
>>
Don't be an idiot, go to class
>>
>>377211139
>Because of the nature of games now, especially. Games now have a bunch of collectibles and a competitive side to it. Enticing you to keep playing more and more.

Try collecting bitches' phone numbers instead.
>>
>>377211569
I thought of a good way to cut back on competitive games. There's a gameworks close by my house that has an internet cafe where people play a bunch of comp games. If I made it a weekly thing to play games there instead that means I'll be getting out and socializing while cutting back on games. The few times I went there I always tapped people on the shoulder and asked if they wanna queue together and play. It's pretty fun.

But you're right, competitive gaming isn't really proving anything to anyone, especially myself.
>>
>>377210287
I've gone to the point where going to class in more fun than vidya. Fuck video games.
>>
>>377212227
hahah what a fucking liar
>>
>>377211139

Not every day needs to be jam packed with things you enjoy. If you do not find time to play today there could always be time tomorrow or the next day or on the weekend. Everyone has shit in life they'd rather do than what they need to do, but you cant shirk responsibilities just to do things you enjoy, thats how you go no where. The only way I am able to put stupid hours in at work and learn a trade on the side and still find time for gaming is by realizing every day will run a bit different and cant be filled to the brim with enjoyment, but theres always tomorrow.

Idk fag, I'm high as fuck

>>
>>377210287
>It's sad and stupid. How do I learn self control?
Practice.

Go for a jog every morning before breakfast.
Every morning, never skip a day.
Doesn't matter if you only jog 10 meters before getting tired because you are a fat ass.
Every morning, jog.

Also stop masturbating so much. Masturbating too much screws with your body chemistry and plummets your motivation. Stop browsing porn every fuggen day and clear out your porn folder.
>>
>>377211139
>Can anyone give me real advice on how to learn self control?
Set a timer for 5 minutes. For this 5 minutes you will make a start on the work you are supposed to do. Let's say you have to write some report for uni. You can use those 5 minutes to create the section heads, get all the relevant information/data, etc. Then take a 5 minute break to do fuck all or shitpost on /v/. Then, work for 5 minutes: you already made a start, now you just have to write. Take a break again.

Repeat this cycle. Up the time working once you get the feeling those 5 minutes are holding you back from making any real progress. It's hard to write for just 5 minutes, and then have to take your mind of it.
>>
Reward yourself with 30 minutes of play time for every mile you walk/run

Videogamess are just another thing you can use as a coping mechanism if you can't handle life facefirst.

personally I'd just handle life facefirst. If you're a screwup who can't do anything, too lazy to achieve anything? Then face it. Do the best with what you can, and enjoy your screwed up laziness. At least your life will be easy.
>>
https://youtu.be/P8bv_LBeSvY

>you will now be able to choke the life out of everyone as a lawbringer.
>>
>>377215054
If you are unhappy about being a lazy screwup, then change it. Use those feelings as a motivation to progress.
Or, if you can't progress, accept your situation and stop being unhappy about it.
Not everybody can be Buzz Aldrin, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Adolf Hitler, or Josef Fritzl. Perhaps you are IRL's equivalent of a background NPC.
Might as well live your role properly rather than struggling with your own nature.
>>
Change the information you take in. If all you do is go to /v/ and take in other vidya shit of course your mind is going to be only on vidya. Read a fucking book. Find an interesting podcast. Before I fell ill I listened to this shit: http://www.jamesaltucher.com/category/the-james-altucher-show/

doesn't even matter if it's any good. As long as it's not vidya.
>>
>As long as it's not vidya
Good, going to /v/ it is, then.
>>
Exercise does help. Running, walking, I figured out swimming laps was pretty easy and I liked it more than running. Next is make a schedule and stick to it. Get your shit done before gaming, don't put it off. It was easier for me to study in thr library than in my room because i felt like other peopel wluld judge me if they saw me browsing reddit or 4chan instead of textbooks. I would say try to find a tutor bedore trying counseling. Heck it can be your roommate or parents or whoever, just make sure someone is helping you stick to your study schedule.
>>
>>377215365
Lot of counselors these days are soft cunts, too. Comfort you with pleasant words and thoughts and teach you that the road to stopping your anxiety is inner peace.

Sometimes what you need is a hard bitch or a hard bastard that'll rub your face on the concrete if you don't do your fuckin job, and remind you that the way to stopping your anxiety is to stop being shit.
>>
It's not really an addiction to games since I'd still choose a number of other things like lurking 4chan over self improvement
I just don't care
>>
>>377215624
If you don't care, then do your not caring -properly-.
You wouldn't make a thread if you didn't give a shit.
Being too lazy to care about anything is a valid way to live life.
You are clearly not living that life, since you care.
Either stop being lazy or be lazy properly.

I think the criteria for this is to simply be good at something that is valued. The "everyone has to go to college" shit is a dumb meme perpetuated by the college business complex. Make no mistake: college is a business, and one not necessarily meant to benefit its students.

Clean up your room and start organizing your environment
make a schedule no matter how shitty and stick to it
Do work in public areas or at the very least stay out of your room as much as possible
Buy a cheap laptop with shitty specs and only use that for a while
If you're creative, do some writing/world building, if not take up a hobby, any hobby

you literally have to come to terms with the fact that you must limit video games to only be played once your 'duties' have been competed. Whatever those may be.

First thing you do after school / work is homework / chores. Then your free time is for you to do what you want.

Start introducing order in your life, literally map out time in your day.

3-4pm pay bills
4-5 clean apartment
6-??? video games

I ended up dropping out of my first year if college, partly due to vidya.

that shit is honestly criminal. It should be a requirement that accurate job prospects are told when you enter a degree, or just stop colleges from pulling that shit altogether.

I remember a conversation my dad had with the head of a university. Went basically like:
>so why are you making a pharma school? (there are a ton of them in the state and there are too many graduating pharmacists anyways )

>>377221246

I applied to friggen Home Depot and they said no because they don't hire engineers for low positions since, "You'll leave in 3 months for something better." And the 1000's, literally 1000's of jobs for Engineers in my field want 5+ years for *entry* level jobs, jobs that guys with 5+ years of work experience won't touch because frankly it's benneath them. So those jobs just sit empty and the extra work is picked up by other engineers who don't (can't) want to admit to their boss they can't handle the extra work of 3 extra jobs because that company's HR department is run by a bunch of Phych majors who don't know the first thing about what makes an engineer useful.

I'm not mad, I'm fucking pissed. I could have majored in English or History and enjoyed 4 years of school but instead I worked my ass off at the hardest degree and got shit for it.

I'm sorry but I just don't buy your story. I graduated with a fucking writing degree--as artsy fartsy/liberal arts as it gets--and landed a job at a software company in 2010 when the economy was still mostly shit. Started at 33.5k salary in what was basically tech support, now my average salary last 3 years has been around 110-120k since i moved into a sales position.

I realize that kind of salary growth is crazy abnormal especially in just a single company but the fact that you have an engineering degree and cant find work is BS. I personally know several chem engineer degree guys who found jobs within months post college around the same time. You just have to be relentless, send 100s of resumes, who cares if 90% never call you back. it sounds to me like you are barely trying. or expand your horizons as far as industry, location, etc there are TONS of technical jobs out there and the common thread is that there arent enough americans out there to fill them (hence why pajeets are still granted visas despite anti-immigration sentiment seemingly at all time highs)

Well I've been playing games since the NES but it only became about escapism after I dropped out of school for just not fitting in. It was Diablo 2 for a few years, and then FFXI for quite a few more. I live a more balanced life now but escapism is still basically my habitual energy.

Actual advice here: Turn not playing vidya into a game.
Keep track of points earned by doing non-vidya activities (chores, school, non-vidya interactions) and reward yourself with vidya or desserts ONLY when you've accumulated enough points.

The sense of accomplishment you get from vidya can be transferred to any activity, so long as you approach it with the same lusory attitude.

Over time, it will get easier to control yourself.

The idea that everyone will ultimately "live and work in their dream job and dream location" is just a recipe for unhappiness. Don't me wrong, if you are passionate it's worth pursuing what you are passionate about, but realize (depending on what that is) that you may be fighting an uphill battle for nothing. To each their own I suppose, but the idea that you "have to work in your chosen field" is millennial faggotry (speaking as a millennial myself).

More importantly, there are such a diversity of jobs out there, you really never know what you may fall into. And on top of that, a lot of times it's less about your "profession" and more about the company you work for + the people there. I mentioned i work in software sales, but the software i sell is fairly niche and i never in a million years would've thought this was something one could make a career out of. I dont love sales but i do enjoy what our company does and its something i wouldn't have ever been aware of in school.

I did. Did an internship at a Waste Water Treatment plant. Worked my ass off. Even instituted a new policy. But it was a govt' job and they didn't hire me. And at this point, I've been out of school long enough, internships don't want me anymore.

>>377221947
>I realize that kind of salary growth is crazy abnormal especially in just a single company but the fact that you have an engineering degree and cant find work is BS

I graduated last year (2016) with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. I did research while in school, ran clubs. Started a new class that was added to the curriculum it was so useful/well done. I was in the Army for 5 years prior to school (only reason I'm not salty over Student loans, I have none), and did an internship. And nope, can't get a job to save my fucking life.

I've applied to everything from Home Depot to god damn Monsanto. No one wants me. Either I'm grossly overqualified, or don't have enough experience. And as I've found out, you can't lie. You get caught, and then those background check websites mark you as having lied and you're fucked for life.

I managed an engineering degree. Clearly, I'm not lazy. I want to work, but no one wants me. My labor is worthless, apparently.
>>

>>
>>377222629

How many resumes do you send out a week? What kind of geographic net are you casting? If you are confining yourself to one area, do you have a valid reason to do so, or are you just being lazy? Are you applying to all kinds of engineering jobs? Or all kinds of jobs in general?

My 62 year old mother who spent 30 years at a contact lens company and got canned after making $200k+ just found a job in a totally different industry. She faced the whole "overqualified/overpaid" type of stuff but If she can do it with retirement on the horizon I'm confident that a recent grad with a real degree can find employment.

If you are truly that desperate, and you aren't sending out your resume at least once a day, you're doing it wrong.

>>
>>377222557
What you say is not unreasonable, but I really believe you should pursue what you believe in. Even if you don't make it, I still think the pursuit is worth it. I don't necessarily equate this with working in your chosen field. For me, at least, this has changed over the years, and will probably change again. I agree with never knowing what you might fall into, though. I've experienced that in my life to the extreme.

You think I'm crazy? I've applied to jobs on most continents at this point, other states/countries was on day 1. And all kinds. Not just Engineering. No one cares. I don't have any work experience. I never had 'regular' jobs. I went from High School to the Army to College. I've done lots of things, professional things, but no work experience. And that's all that, apparently, matters now. And I can't get job experience to GET job experience.

And I apply, on average, to about ten jobs *A DAY,* EVERY day. After a year of doing it I no longer believe I will get a job, it's just a ritual I go through. I can practically do it in my sleep.
>>
>>377223125

Are you fucking retarded? I got a degree in Chemical Engineering. All I do is Math and Chemistry.
>>
>>377223263

Well if you say so. Just keep at it. Also I'd recommend calling/following up on resumes you send. Furthermore the whole "experience" thing is overblown. A lot of ads will say that but that doesn't mean you can't apply. These people are weighing you against others with loads of experience that may be demanding more $$ than they are willing to pay. In other words even if it doesnt seem possible "on paper", business doesnt operate like it does on paper all the time. For example the ad for my job requested a comp sci/econ/math major or equivalent experience and i had neither, but i got the job because i could hold a conversation, and the other candidates were masters/phd holders that were looking for 70k+ salaries while i was just happy to get my foot in the door.

Oh I always apply. Pretty much within a week of looking I realized I had to apply to jobs expecting 5+ years of experience otherwise I wouldn't be able to apply for anything. But honestly, I cannot for the life of me understand why I cannot find a job. I mean I get why Home Depot, or Target, doesn't hire me. They see "Engineer" and think it's a temp job until I find something better and don't want to be my whore. That logic holds and I can even go so far as to say I'd do the same thing in their shoes. But dyed in the wool perfect jobs that I fit in, that stay open month after month, won't hire me. Even if it plays into the specialties I developed during my research and internship.

>There must be some sort of giant red flag with your application or background or name.

Not that I'm aware of. I've even used a nickname as the given name just to test that and it made no difference. I've mentioned being a vet and not mentioned it (it's not required to admit it if you don't want), I've truly tried everything and cannot get a job to save my life. If I didn't have my pension I don't know what I'd do.
>>
>>377226550

Also, I'm not the only one. Of all my friends I graduated with, only 2-3 (out of 50) have gotten jobs in our field on their own merits (a few others, not many, got jobs from an immediate family member). My best friend has been working for a temp agency for the past year and they have been looking for excuses to get rid of him because he's just too much for that kind of job.

I scoffed at youth unemployment when I was in the Army, but I'm not scoffing anymore. And this is everyone's problem. I'm consuming public services, consuming tax dollars, and not paying a dime in taxes. I'm not paying into Social Security, I'm not paying state or federal taxes, and I *want* to, I have no problem with that, but no one is willing to hire me so I'm just sucking stuff up and not contributing. And I'm not the only one. And that's a problem for everyone.

I remember when I was on some chemo-tier IV antibiotics (severe nausea), I'd play vidya for like a week to help endure and then never want to touch them again.

My situation is a bit abnormal, so maybe that's where my lack of enjoyment for these things is coming from. When I was in school I'd work all day and then do some vidya before bed and I fucking loved it.

nah. you can't just have a surge in population, have entire industries replaced by machines practically overnight and expect things to be the same as they've always been.

honestly though, the only people who sit around all day are depressed, not "lazy". everyone wants to do things and contribute/feel useful in some way. that's just natural. but it's not always economically viable to do what you love or are good at, even if it helps society. consider the internet browser you're using right now. you didn't pay for that. kind of important if you want to access the internet. things like patreon pages and donations are only a kludge and aren't sustainable, at least not for everyone. I'm guessing more people will have to be put on welfare or something to sustain an economy. of course they'll have to change the name so people don't get triggered. weird times.
