I mean, I like the core mechanics. The armor thing's cool. Tying up executions to salvaging parts is cool. I like the energy system's general versatility, and how it encourages the Bloodborne-ish constant attacking thing. I like how there's a fuckton of mechanics tied to the core power/leveling system, the armor/implants taking slots, the whole gating by overcharging thing, and so on.
There's a lot to like about the core mechanics.

And I actually like the industrial, sci-fi aesthetic too, but there's really nothing much beyond that. The enemy variety's really underwhelming too. And as much as I appreciate how well the level is designed, how well signposted they are, and how there's a lot of cool shit like seeing how things connect via cables and pipes and shit, it gets kinda boring when you don't actually care about the setting and the story they're telling, the uniformity of the design just gets irritating, not in a good way.

And not to mention the bosses. Yeesh.

Dark futuristic industrial complexes filled with augmented zombies, satisfying and visually pleasing combat, properly scaled difficulty level and plenty of different cool looking weapons and armor. I normally don't quit games because it feels casual to do so, but in this case I made an exception.
I died after I rebooted the system before the first boss and when I went back to get my scrap the boss spawned, lost 6k scrap that way.
Boss killed me twice by clipping me into his body and had me dying from falldamage of all things.
In the dark section they constantly tell me to turn on my lights, but without a body piece I can't.
It started really promissing but I feel like there is way too much bullshit that drags it down.

The line is pretty blurry in this post-cyberpunk era but still if your complaint is "I want something with an atmosphere similar to Deus Ex" this doesn't seem very far off the mark. Especially the prequels, which are far more traditionally cyberpunk anyway, in that they have less of the conspiracy kitchen sink stuff and focus more on the effects of augmentation on society. Hell, The Surge and Human Revolution seem to pretty much share one big plot point about the dangers of putting foreign objects in your body that are ultimately not owned by you but someone else. Turning people into zombies is just the ultimate expression of those dangers.

The aesthetics suck ass. Jumpsuits, big bulky exoskeletons, stupid arm weapon attachments, shitty level design where every area looks the same.

Dunno what people are smoking, but this is way worse than Lords of the Fallen.

The first 15 minutes of LotF had more story, customization options, equipment variety, interesting enemies, good level design, secrets and memorable bosses than anything I saw in 3 hours playing The Surge. Armor is basically useless, as there's almost no difference between light and heavy armor - you usually die in 2-3 hits anyway. The targeting & slicing thing is interesting at first, but the system behind it is entirely based on grinding. And all the optional challenges, detailed item lore and magical gems were removed. All there's to see here is the unusual sci-fi setting and the targeting mechanic. Once the novelty wears off, you just have a bland Souls clone.

actually really enjoying it. combat is both fast and yet has some heft to it.

blocking seems completely useless since you can't strafe while doing so, wish they removed it completely (a la bloodborne), maybe making the whole ducking/jumping mechanic easier to pull off.

level design is really good, i prefer this over the latter Dark Soul's disjointed world. areas tend to loop back on themselves, so far there's been 1 'bonefire' and a few different paths leading back to it in one way or another.

the game was too dark by default imo, had to bump up brightness so i could actually see shit.

really nice presentation, the animations are amazing imo. the second boss especially, the way to spun along w/ the motion blur made it really intimidating.

only niggle so far is enemy variety and the fact that they tend to do the 'hide enemy in annoying place so he gets the jump on you' a lot.

will prob play some more after Prey.

Absolute joke of a story, for one, but the combat was not nearly as good as what it was trying to emulate. The most effective strategy in LotF was to tank and spank, really. Spells were really abuse-ready in some cases, so you could just sit back and totally destroy a boss anyway. It's like Nioh.
