Started playing the series at Awakening, really liking SoV right now. It does the "multiple factions" thing better than Fates.

Literally every single person who buys into the idea that Awakening was "different" or a "shift in focus" for the series is retarded.

I've been playing the games since I was 8. For years, I was part of various FE communties - SF, whatever other shitty invisionfree forums I could find. And you know what?

Awakening was every fan's wet fucking dream. It was the ultimate fanservice game. Tons of supports, child units, the return of skills, and a bunch of other callbacks to the series' history. This was the fucking MAGNUM OPUS of FE.

Now, it turned out later on that the game wasn't really that good, it had its flaws, but those were all just executional errors, not design errors. Lunatic was a bit unfair, L+ was completely broken, Pair Up was stupidly OP and completely necessary, there were some issues with OP units, etc. etc. Again, numbers issues, not problems of design. In every single design aspect, Awakening was literally everything every single fan had been asking for for years. Even down to the writing, frankly - the series NEVER had supports as detailed as Awakening's.

Well, I shouldn't say every aspect. FE games were you can grind are shit. But other than that - and even Sacred Stones has a rabid following.

This whole "old FE vs nu FE" thing is perpetuated by trolls and a bunch of oversensitive idiots who were clearly never part of the community to begin with. Even if you were to see Awakening and Fates as departures, so fucking what? Do you know how many times the series has done complete gameplay and design changes over the years? There are like two games which are even remotely comparable to each other. Anyone who was actually a fan of the series would be completely okay with Awakening and Fates having different styles. That's not a "true Scotsman" argument, that's a basic causal effect. If you were a fan of the series, there's no way you wouldn't have encountered the wide variety of games within it. And therefore you'd be a fan of that variety.

That's why there's only 12 chapters, castles act as checkpoints, and the game has Battle Saves. There's only a few points in the game where it actually is a slog like going through the forest in Chapter 2 or backtracking after recruiting Briggid.

Liked the GBA games, loved Awakening, but I couldn't get through Conquest as my only route I bought in Fates. Awakening kind of had that drought in the series that it capitalized on, and fulfilled what people wanted from a true-to-its-roots (or close to it) JRPG.

Fire Emblem just doesn't need to be releasing games as quickly as Pokemon, if that makes sense. I'm not going to get Echoes because after Fates I'm not sure if the continuous rollout of FE means the quality is also on the rise.

Waifus is the least of the issues with awakening/fates, most of the issue is that over half the maps are just phoned in and there's only a small handful of actually interesting map designs. Compared to previous titles, where the map was designed around strategic enemy placements and choke points, it seems, especially notable in early to mid chapters of fates, that modern design is to create a visually interesting map, and then stick the boss at one end and your units at the other and pepper the middle with random enemy units.

The gba FEs were known for their waifus to the point where fanart and fanworks are still being created to this day. But they're also known for really good map design, and the 3DS Fire Emblem games so far have yet to capture that.
