It just seems that SEGA is stepping up their game big time and nobody knows what they have in the pipeline. Both Bayo and Vanquish releases happened in a pretty small timeframe which leads to the assumption that these projects were planned for portation a long time now. I've only played 1. It really doesn't have similarities with GTA except for the urban environment and the fact that it's a story about criminals/fighting criminals. You go around the city, folloow story missions, have casual encounters with enemies, there's bonus missions... the fighting is focused on combos, dodging, using random objects and supers. It's really fun and energetic, and mind that the first afaik is the clunkiest and slowest of them so i can only imagine the improvements in the sequels

The story is typical japanese drama. Twists, betrayals, screaming, crying, but it pulls it off very well and with a good sense of humour at times. Although if you plan to play the latest I've heard the story of 6 is kinda dumb. Plus it's a continuous story, so you're better off playing the earlier games first anyway if you can

The open "world" is usually just 1-3 town areas, but they're densely packed with shit like batting cages, koi-koi, bowling, mahjong, etc. In fact most of the time, the mini-games could easily be their own game
The story is a typical japanese crime melodrama (think takeshi kitano's yakuza films)
However, this is in stark contrast to the non-story shit which can go from sweet, to cool, to weird in the blink of an eye
For example, in Yakuza 0 there's a funny sidequest where you help a dominatrix get better at her job, but there's also a sidequest where you try to get a kid's game back from a thief
They spend a ton of money on licensing as well, so a lot of the locations and items are real brands or buildings (for example all of the alcoholic drinks you purchase have real names and the bartender will give you an apt description of each drink's flavor/scent profile)
It's a game that may not look good on the surface, but when you examine all of the details put into it, you really get a sense of how much work was put into the game to make it a cohesive, immersive experience.
Also the gameplay is fucking great if you like men in nice suits beating the crap out of each other
