Anyway in MOM Samus meets with her old CO, Adam, who responded to the same distress call she did. Adam is mad that Samus left the galactic federation so he basically told her to fuck off. But since Samus's nuclear suit is too good an asset to pass up he grudgingly allows her to follow his unit under the conditions that she follows his every order.

This is stupid for a lot of reasons to avoid a wall of text I'll name 3. First Samus is under no obligation to listen to this cunt. She really could've just left and let them all die, she's not on contract with the Federation nor is she a soldier anymore. Second, Samus remarks that this is the first time she's worked co-op with the feds since she left as if Prime 3 didn't happen. Trolls will say Prime was non canon but then I'll point them to the link where Sakamoto says Prime was a Gaiden tale that did happen. As if his word means anything considering the million plot holes in this one game that I won't get into. Third, Samus follows Adam to the point of stupidity, refusing to use life saving equipment because Adam didn't specifically give her permission to do so.

I think probably the worst scene in the entire game is when Adam makes his "heroic sacrifice." Adam goes incommunicado so Samus goes looking for him. Before reaching sector zero she runs into a Metroid. Before she could react Adam shoots SAMUS in the back, deactivating her armor. How did her armor break down from a single shot from a standard, troopers ice beam? Don't ask questions. So Adam kills the Metroid and Samus asks the obvious question

Just saw this thread so I don't know what it's evolved into, but I didn't mind other M as much as I thought I would.

I pirated it and thought I'd at least try it out and I didn't think it was nearly as bad as everyone says. It's a pretty decent game. I enjoyed my time with it.

Yeah, it doesn't measure up to the primes or super, but it was still a good vidya experience. I can't really hate on it.

Or pretty much every other franchise. Mario is still using Fludd. Yoshi and Kirby didn't have yarn skins. Megaman was retro as fuck. Wiifit trainer used the old design. Bayonetta had her clothes from both games. Cloud had two different looks. Ryu didn't have a beard. And most of the characters in the game have a look that is unique to smash bros. Only with Metroid did it seem that they were obsessed with everything being based on the "latest materials".

I liked the game though I fully admit there were problems with it.
1) story was derp.
2) upgrade unlocking made sense that they needed to have progression for samus but how you unlocked it was stupid
3) game is too short. Not enough to explore
4) pixel hunt was dumb

Annoyance mostly but not enough for me to denounce the game. I liked it and thought it was a good first step into a 3D metroid that need to be expanded upon more.

Fix controls, remove the story, make new upgrades, expanded the world exploration.

People hate Adam much more of a game mechanic than anything because of the things he did like not allow Samus to have her Varia suit on on a volcano and unnecessarily restricting her suit. If there really was such a strong bond between the two you would think Adam would trust Samus to not run around like a crazed madman dropping Power Bombs everywhere instead of needing to block and later authorize each and every power-up. Do you know how annoying it is to see what power-up you need right in front of you, know story wise that you already have it in your suit, but Adam won't let you use it for no reason at all? Because in Fusion the closest thing to "evil" that the Federation was doing was just being a bit too power-grabby, and really wanting to be able to weaponize the metroids, which could feasibly have countless positive influences on the galaxy. Nothing going on at the BSL was morally dark or corrupt or being carried out with the intention of nefarious purposes, it was all genuine research.
The entire conflict between Samus and the Federation was portrayed as the Federation just failing to properly evaluate the threat level of the X Parasites, and placing far too much value on the Metroid research samples. Samus felt she was better suited to make the call on how dangerous the X were and how worth it the Metroid research would be, and that's why she disobeyed orders (she was also in the right here).
Other M just full-on states that the Federation is corrupt and willing to go out of its way to kill innocent people in order to cover up their unethical and poorly motivated research labs on the bottle ship.

Not that guy, but the flow of combat is pretty bad in Other M, combat encounters are a case of everything to lose and nothing to gain because killed monsters no longer drop items seeing as you have recharge stations and that focus move.
Beams feel like shit to fire, and you can easily break combat by holding the fire button and tapping a direction repeatedly til you get the invuln dodge and insta-charge, and missiles are pretty much only used when you can't damage the target any other way.
The flow of combat gets halted for those cinematic takedowns too, it just feels pretty bad all around.

Which is a shame because I like the idea of a Metroid game where Samus can dropkick things or bash them with her arm cannon alongside shooting the hell out everything in her way.

I agree with all of that, I've just been saying that it worked for me when I was younger and clearly worked for the guy I originally replied to. I was offering an explanation as to why it could for some people when they aren't thinking about the gameplay at all. That makes more sense, the weapons were crazy, the final boss felt out of Samus's league, and they were in another Galaxy and not our galaxy like every other Metroid game takes place. All other Metroid games fit in canon, Hunters always felt like that odd one out. Plus there's an ending where Samus dies and her Zero Suit is open hands. A good comparison would be Halo Legends Odd One Out since it has elements from Halo's canon but isn't actually canon.

I think of it more like the Majora's Mask of the franchise. It uses characters that exist in universe in a completely different way than they were originally used. Sylux has showed up twice afterwards, so there's no reason why the rest of the Hunters couldn't be canon. Not like Kanden or Spire are really all that interesting, but Spire could make for an interesting plot device in a Metroid game based around his home world.

Noxus, Trace, and Sylux are the real interesting ones, and I hope we at least see more Sylux. It'd give us another Smash rep, at the very least.

Outside of Sylux, we haven't seen any of them show up, but I think a couple are a given. Weavel would be pretty easy to make into a Space Pirate commander in a game focusing on them again. Trace is just a mindless drone from a Zerg-like species of planet invaders, so his species could easily be repurposed, like the Ing. Noxus is basically JUSTICE the ice Chozo, working as an intergalactic arbiter of peace and prosperity, so he'd be easy to fit into a Metroid game about having to fight off the "good" guys and the bad guys at the same time.

It's such a shame that Metroid is on the backburner when Hunters opened so many doors.
