Desus difficulty comes from the objectives you have to complete and countering what the level laid out for you. Fire emblem is easily solved with "turtling" where as you can get overwhelmed on certain leves trying that shit in desu. They just supervise it while Career soft did the rest of the work. They have been doing tactical rpgs since 1996? If you read the dev blogs and the intentions with devil survivor you would understand that it was never meant to be super tactical but instead be a more accessible entry in the SMT series. Also most of the focus went to demons which is where most of the work is at. Cracking the right skills and making sure your demons are up to the task is the key. Langrisser IV and Front Mission 2 are some of my favourite SRPGs but Shining Force II is among my least favourite. There were a couple decent maps but the vast majority is bland and non-tactical. The game is more light hearted and the characters are a bit more tropey. The gameplay is similar to overclocked except demon abilities evolve later on so you get some crazy strong abilities, making demon choices even more important. As for whether or not it's better or worse, I dunno. I like the atmosphere and the characters overall in the first one more but the second one is still good.

Also here is a tip try to compliment what the team leader lacks. For example equip yuzu with a demon that has pretty good STR and of course also one with with good magic. Devil Survivor 1 & 2 are extremely easy if you reset to refresh the auction since you can stock up on demons with watchful to fuse demons with tons of extra stats and/or you can buy a lot of low level demons to fuse into high level demons. Most people will easily beat the games this way with no deaths and no free battles.
Has anyone tried playing without resetting the auction? Does it become more interesting because you're less overpowered, or is it just less fun because you can't manipulate the battle system as much?

I didn't even know that was a thing first time I played through to be honest. I didn't find out until I reached a roadblock with Belberith, and did slightly abuse it because my demons were kind of shit.

I think it's a nice thing to have, it's kind of hard to figure out if you're not using a walkthrough or guide or something and it's not so easily able to break shit since you do kind of have to get lucky with the auction and you still need to grind free battles for cash, but it can help if you're stuck, especially with the endgame battles. Only time I really abused it was for Belberith and Lucifer, though.

Yeah demon fusion breaks these games just like all modern MegaTens and Personas. I think that's why there's such a divide between people who say they're tough and people who say they're easy. Whenever DeSu gets discussed, I've noticed tons of people saying it's their first srpg and/or first SMT. I could understand why someone who has never previously learned the SMT golden rule that fusing stronger demons and getting stronger skills is how you actually get stronger in SMT games (as opposed to just muh levelin' up, which doesn't help as much in these games) might have a hard time playing DeSu, especially if it's also their first srpg. Not that guy, but a good player can beat FE games without resetting at all. Often with 0% growths, too.

The appeal FE and other SRPGs hold for most players is that you can come up with comprehensive tactics that will ensure success regardless of how the RNG rolls. If everything goes well you will finish the chapter in a small number of turns but even if you don't have a 100% hit rate on one move, you can adapt the strategy to accomodate a miss and still achieve success.

Some people just map out one possible path through a chapter and reset until everything goes perfectly but that's pretty boring and will deprive the player of most of the experience the genre offers.

It's really hard to pin down, the game just seems so uninteresting to me. Not a fan of the Demon Auction, story seems to take forever to go anywhere, if it ever does. Grinding is not just about exp, you can also grind for macca to get better demons and in the process you're grinding levels.

Wendigo is very easy to beat. The key is that he only has enough MP to use ice dance once, so you can send one unit to fight him and just use defend to tank it, then bring in your MC with your strongest demons to deal damage.

What grinding are you talking about? You start with a few demons and you get enough macca from story battles to buy a couple more so you should have a full party.

The average player beats the game with no human deaths in battle and having fought zero free battles.
