Regardless, you misinterpreted OP's point. Zones like Labyrinth, Scrap Brain and Marble have a significant lack of loops and slopes, slowing Sonic down substantially. Those levels are directly at odds with Sonic's physics based gameplay and design philosophy.

Sonic 2 and 3 do a much better job at keeping the gameplay fast and fluid whilst still keeping it interesting and challenging.

The point of the games are not to go fast. That's boost shit only. The classic games had Yuji Naka's idea of skill = speed implemented into them, so the point of the games is to take and slow and literally get good so that you can go fast in the future

Well, back then, these cartridges costed the modern day equivalent of around $120. You played a handful of games, and you learned them inside and out. Most games didn't really reveal if they were a "good game" or not until after that initial memorization period.

There was also a very big market for game hints and tips, and guides were almost expected.

Sonic WAS fast in 1991 when he came out. Keep in mind that when the Genesis came out it was a full 2 years before the SNES. It's only competition at the time was the Amiga and Atari ST and both of these did not have any games that could compare to Sonic.

Now, in terms of how this speed actually plays out...I have to agree with those who say it fails in the fact you can't see to far ahead of you at top speed.
