It's nice for continued support once a game is abandoned by the developer assuming there isn't a login server or something stupid. Really in the end most things will lead back to server costs and uptime.

They do it because it is cheaper.

It is shit, because it gives one of the players host advantage.

It is also shit because it is inevitibly paired with a matchmaking service, to justify the cost to connect to a P2P network, and give the multiplayer a killswitch for when the devs decide it is time for the player base to upgrade.

For some games, you're not at the mercy of devs shutting down the servers
