I think it's actually quite amazing. Real life is pretty mundane. Even if you have an exciting sounding job it's probably going to be boring 90% of the time. Achieving anything takes a lot of time and effort so you can't achieve many big things in life. Also in real life you feel pain and there are no continues or respawns.

In video games you can drive the most expensive cars, travel to exotic locations, feel excitement without any real risk, take part in great adventures, have magic powers, experience a fantasy world...

And with time with things like VR the immersion will just get better.

I actually feel the exact opposite. I majored in what I loved (music) realized that making what you love your job makes you hate what you love. plus the fact that there is little money to be had in the music industry thus not allowing me to enjoy my hobbies (travel, lots of vidya, nice food). So I went to grad school in something I don't feel strongly about either way (law) just so I can make enough money to do whatever I want in my free time.

Tldr: I think following your dream job makes you hate your dream job. But YMMV
