In the games I've played I've never seen a desert level be awful (except Agrabah in some of the KH games). They're "Okay" at worst and fantastic at best, like in OP's example.

0/10 if it doesn't have any plants because whoever made it didn't even look at pictures of actual deserts

This. I find them to be pretty drab and unless there are some oases or pyramids or something, they're generally very samey.
Tropical settings with more vegetation or marine life are much more vibrant and interesting.

canyon - 3/10, one of my least favorite biomes

desert - 5/10, some games do it really well, others they're extremely bland. i get neither excited nor disappointed when i enter a desert area in a game

Desert areas are the second most boring/lazy environments in gaming only to be trumped by snow areas.

"Just put white shit everywhere, fuck it, its snowing, we don't have to design shit" is how I always see snow areas.

Great if there are outposts/towns and it isn't just sand; there has to be greenery scattered about so it doesn't feel lifeless.

Deserts suck.

Deserts have a lot of possibilities with the fact that they could have some really cool ancient structures. Sadly a lot of games don't take advantage of that and they just end up being boring with nothing in them. At max there's one or two shitty little towns.
