Story is better than Fates, because it's mostly more straight forward. None of this "Outrealms" stuff. Or Babyrealms and whatnot.

Gameplay sucks. Maps are not changed from Gaiden, so they're these nice big empty maps.

I have many other complaints, but unless you wanna hear them I'll withhold.

Supports are a shit show. Several characters get a pittance of Support convos. Genny, one of Celica's childhood friends literally gets 1 and it's not even with her friends Celica, Mae or Boey. It's with Sonya. For what purpose? Saber doesn't get one with anyone except Jesse. Not even with Celica who is her contractor.

Dungeon crawling is a gimmick through and through. It's neat at the beginning, but it wears thin really really quickly. The fatigue system may as well not exist, because you get so much food you will never, ever run out. The later dungeons are horrible. The post game dungeon consists of 10 floors with no checkpoint.

The equip system isn't great. You can only equip 1 item, whether it's a weapon or a shield. Now it's cool that you can learn skills that way, but it loses any sense of variety that other FEs had. In any other FE in battle I can adapt to a situation by equipping a different weapon right away, but in this only Alm or Celica can do that because they hold the convoy. It just reduces the tactical gameplay for me.

Mage animations are mediocre. Melee guys get some neat stuff, mostly the Dread Fighters, but Mages get the shit end. They have pretty much only 1 set of animations, so when they crit they do literally the same animation if it were a kill. Compared to Fates, which had some neat Crit animations for Mages (see : Sorcerer), this feels like a downgrade.

Like I said on the maps, they're shit. In dungeons they're just empty squares basically. Little terrain to speak of, just some tiles to hide on with their absurd 40-60 Avoid. Other maps are a complete slog. There's a massive swamp map on Celica's route that you basically just have to walk through 2 squares at a time while Gargoyles occasionally fly at you, except they're a non issue because you just got the Whitewings, so it's just a really boring shit map.

Almost hit char limit, but this is most of it anyway.

There's a number of other smaller gripes I had, like the class variety being bare bones. And also the absurd DLCs. Literal promotions being held as DLCs. Luckily, it would take an eternity to get to the level you needed anyway.

what really confuses me is, did IntSys think that Gaiden was the kind of game that would have good gameplay if they added a few bells and whistles? Shadow Dragon/New Mystery had decent/good gameplay because the base games were already pretty good. Gaiden is a mess in a lot of areas (mostly maps of course) and weapon skills aren't going to make that problem disappear. It's a shame, because they knocked it out of the park with the other QoL, characterization and story aspects of the game

Did awakening end up being the most well rounded game of the 3? While conquest has all around better gameplay I dont think there is an aspect of awakening that is as bad as fates story or echoes maps

When I played the original Gaiden I actually liked it a lot, and my few complains where the lack of replayability and the bad simplistic maps.
Still hype for the game, but sad that those flaws weren't touched.

That was probably the biggest thing that fucked with me when I played Fates.
I'm so used to "Hard" FE games like FE6 HM where you can just have enemies suicide onto your strong units. Then in Fates I nearly shit myself when a bunch of enemies ignored my strong units, and instead made a beeline for Elise.

Honestly, I think this is another case of IS making a little too faithful of a remake. One of the reasons to remake games is to enhance them by including mechanics that were added later and smoothed out mechanics. There isn't even a weapon triangle in Echoes. I honestly kind of want to just go back and finish Conquest since Conquest's gameplay was a lot more engaging.

Also the 3DS doesn't do Hidari's art justice at all, shit looks blurry as hell. I hope Hidari stays for FE Switch so we can get in-game art like this at a good resolution.

Looks like I'm not the only way that feels that way. They made her more of a brat. I mean she always was a brat, but she comes off as a much bigger one in the dub. Like in her support with Clair she doesn't shit talk her brother nearly as much in the Japanese version as the does in the English one. Especially in the A conversation when Clair gets her to admit that she does like her brother. Delthea has lines where she puts him even after she admits to liking him that wasn't in the Japanese version. I can't say I felt the best sibling love at all.

Am an hour in and the story feels like it's building itself as something important. Personally, I like when games take the extra mile to present a not-terrible story, but I have been burned many many times when games say "fuck it" and just drop the story all together. Is this one of those games?

Add that on top of the game being very easy and having bloated stats makes it hard to replay. I can replay 4, the GBA trilogy, Tellius duology, and Conquest , but I give up on Awakening halfway in.

The reason why Conquest was so challenging was that you only had a limited amount of encounters and EXP to distribute to your units aka no grinding at all. There are dungeons in this game that you could use to grind EXP, but unless you don't have the willpower to not grind, it should be a pretty fair challenge.

I feel Thracia and the Radiant games were still stronger. They still had satisfying gameplay without having to put up with everything else being terrible.

I'm also really not a fan of how 90% of Fates' challenge comes from the enemy builds rather than the actual map or any objectives. Fighting tougher and tougher enemy formations repeatedly gets dull, especially if there isn't even any good story to back it up.

I'm a couple of hours into Echoes. Does this shit get any better? The story, characters, and gameplay all feel completely disappointing compared to Fates. I don't even care that the story in Fates is retarded, it was at least unique and fun to see how they would fuck it up. Only if you feel like cheesing it. Beating it legitimately is a great feeling. All lot of the maps don't use gimmicks like Takumi's wall and Sakura's and those are 5 and 6 type of FE.

They aren't supposed to be used all the time. Sliver Swords are special weapons for bosses or enemies you can't kill in one hit. Iron weapons have always dominated FE. You won't have enough money to constantly upgraded weapons unless you use DLC.

Nah, in this case it's pretty blatant rewrites because 8-4 wanted to change the flow of the conversation.
The first time has whatshername say "Kliff..." in the Japanese and the localised line is "Kliff... Wait, why not?", adding an extra response to Kliff's statement that wasn't in the original.
The second time is Kliff saying "etto...", a word that's just a placeholder like "uh" is for us, and the localised line is "Uh, I hate to break it to you, Faye...", the purpose being the same as the last time.
8-4 don't seem to like characters trailing off as is common in Japanese scripts and instead chose to rewrite it into something they thought was more natural, it's not any sort of straight translation of a peculiar word.

I was using CFW, however, my 3DS was updated through means I don't want to explain and now I can't get back in.

Is there a way to fix this? I was using RXtools, but now I want to get the most up to date CFW.

If Alm is just using the gods' names as an exclamation of shock, that means that the localisation has made him into a person who takes the gods' names in vain. That's now become a part of his character, whether it meshes with the setting or not, all as a result of 8-4's silly rewrite. And, as usual, the most silly part of it is that there was no reason to rewrite it in the first place.

That was always the point. It's a JRPG/SRPG hybrid. You'll enjoy the game a lot more if you stop trying to expect the classic FE formula out of it, just like with Gaiden.

On another note, the story in this game is actually really good. Mycen's dialogue in particular is quite well written. I loved his little speech to Alm at the end of Act 1 about carrying the burdens of the people. Reminds me a lot of the type of dialogue in the Tellius games.

Don't use the online features of the game until the game is officially out. The same thing happened when Sun and Moon got leaked, and people were somehow surprised when they got banned.

So are people enjoying it? Is a smaller story better or worse than sky dragons? Not really talking about localization changes but how is the localization by itself?
